Hazardous Marine Life Warning-Any Threat Here?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Having seen this report i'm curious as to:

- How real Is the threat locally?

- How prepared are the Hospitals?

- Has there been any confirmed cases, other than the usual "bloke in a pub" tales?

I'm sure i'm not alone in enjoying the odd wallow & want to ensure we're all safe...

Don't forget to watch out for sea urchins too! I got 6 spines in my foot and 2 in my finger last week. Painful as hell. I tried to go swimming when the tide was very low and the sea was not clear in Taling Gnam.

Since 2008 I've been writing on a regular base about box jelly fish in Thai waters, check here or here for information.

Unfortunately these warnings are not just because some 'bloke in the pub' tales but there have been sightings and fatalities in Thai waters. Having said that, it's not a case to get overly worried about but a little bit of precaution may help a lot.

We had 2 victims and 100 more treated by hospital and nurseries an August of several years ago here in Koh Phangan (Haad Rin beach). Was an unusual exceptional outbreak of Cube or Man-o-war jellyfish, not sure. Was probably caused just by the wrong current with the wrong sea-weather conditions. Never occur anymore since then.

It is a sticky HERE.

Don't know much about the jelly fish numbers but diving near the grandfather rock i saw one of the highest concentrations of stonefish i've ever seen.

Oh dear.

Aren't they a bit nasty ?

Stonefish are very rare in these waters and very difficult to detect, most likely you have seen scorpionfish, which are nasty as well.

Man-o-war is very rare in Thai waters but if by 'cube' jelly you mean box jelly fish, you are right, most likely these two victims were stung by box jelly fish.

There have been sighting before and after these two incidents in the Samui archipelago waters, definitely not just a matter of 'the wrong current' or 'the wrong sea water conditions'.

maybe marine jelly fish now work for the army ?

Although I am a man who like to tell tales in the pub, I can confirm they exist having been stung by a Irukandji jelly fish in 2009.

This happened of koh Tao whilst diving, the whole experience was horrific and I had to be initially resuscitated, then I had 4 days in ICU on Samui.Whole thing took months to get over the worst symptoms , and I still have issues today due to the effects of the envenomation.

However I have spent thousands of hours in the sea hear, and this is the only incident I have ever had.
