I don't think Australia can win, but I fear England are capable of losing!

Well 7by7 ... I know how much of a fan you are of the Ashes.

Are you giving up Thai Visa for the 5 days (hopefully) that the Ashes are on?

.

You hopeful he is giving up Thaivisa or that the test goes for 5 days? whistling.gif

I know which some would prefer!

Still the working day here in Blighty, so listening on TMS.

England 98 for 2 (2 for 98 if you prefer) at lunch on day 1.

Morning session to England; just.

Aggers gave a long introduction to Ashton Agar's first over, talking about nerves etc. He then asked his co commentator, Glenn McGrath, if he knew the last time he had given such a long introduction to a debutante Ashes bowler.

The answer? 1993. Immediately followed by Shane Warne's first ball, the 'ball of the century' which dismissed Mike Gatting.

Which reminded me of Botham's comment; "If it had been a meat pie there's no way Gatt would have missed it!"

Trivia corner; according to TMS's statistician, Agar is the 2000th player to bowl in a test match.

Bairstow will do his old man, his county and country proud on his ashes debut, mark my words.

so glad and ever so proud to have the blood of a Yorkshire man, my grand dad and a Yorkshire lass, my mother, running through my veins !

With respect to or Aussie friends; poor batting from England rather than good bowling from the Aussies.

What was it, 29 fours in a total of 215?

A batting side doesn't' score that many fours out of that low a total against a good attack.

Actually just giving them room and rope to get themselves out would seem to be the order of the day. We will see if the Labor unions are in the Aust team and they go, one out all out.

It is always interesting to see what happens after a low score by the opening side, if the next team does badly it points to the pitch or both teams have useless batting, as I said interesting.

Cheers

now the ashes begins !

Watson out, 19 for 1............. let's see what you got Aussies against a world class bowling attack ?

Exactly....their silence on here has spoken volumes...in fact credit to them for not crowing over the poor England batting performance,

I'm surprised y that in fact......biggrin.png

On behalf of us Aussies ... we thanks ya.

Plus ... you know us, shy retiring and tactful to the core ... whistling.gif

... in reality ... I gave up 12.30 am, and went to sleep listening to it on the Radio.

What really surprised me were the number of boundaries hit? Could that be an influence of the 20-20 game?

What happened to rotating the strike?

Surprised also at all the practise wickets contained within the playing surface.

If our (aussie) batting doesn't collapse ... it might appear that we hold a slight advantage ... but remember ... we have to bat last on that dust bowl ... and you have an excellent spinner.

215 is still 215 however you dice it up.

In regard to teh boundaries, that's just how the games are played these days...T20 influence and all that. Plus those small English grounds

I thought 215 was a fairly decent effort Smokie

Early days I know, but surely Ed Cowan Cowan must be on his

last chance. He's only there mainly because of his ability to occupy

the crease.

No surprises here though, most people thought that Australia's bowling

attack is pretty good. It was always going to be about the batting.

Yeah, Cowan has to produce something....of course the question is who would replace him anyway? Australia don't have depth of batting stocks at the moment

Cowan will probably be given as many chances as Phil Hughes, but as mentioned earlier, we just don't have the batting depth that we once had. On paper, we do, but you can't paint a picture on the scoreboard.

Will Warner be recalled for the 2nd test? Boof's not one to buck under pressure and has always been an outspoken SOB - which I like about him - a bit like David Boon, but I can't see Warner coming back from purgatory until at least the 4th test. He needs to learn a lesson and Boof's the type of coach to give it to him.

What a first day though, hopefully setting the scene for an Ashes series worthy of series gone by.

Bring on 5pm!

I think Khawaja would be a decent replacement but no one is knocking the door down.

I think if Boofa thinks Warner could make a difference, he would be in the next test.

If they aren't going to play him until the 4th test, they should've sent him home.

Yep, great first day. The Aussies need to get in front and not end up giving away a 30 plus lead.

Yesterday's overcast conditions definitely favoured the bowlers.

Today is far more batting friendly.

Wont see 14 wickets fall today, but probably a big score from the Aussies unless the English bowlers work very hard, and Broad is not 100%, and the fielders take every chance offered.

James Anderson's ball to dismiss Clarke was something special

Watching on Sky at the time.

Just before that ball Hussein said "Anderson's stopped banging it in short and reverted to what he does best."

While typing this, Anderson's got Smith; ct Prior for 53.

Haddin b Swann, 1.

First innings lead for the Aussies no looking unlikely.

But, as the commentators on TMS have just said, Siddle is the only man in test history to have top scored in both innings when coming in at number 9!

Except while typing this he's out for 1, b Anderson, ct Prior!

I thought it was only England who were prone to such collapses.

Well that escalated quickly!

Thoroughly pathetic effort by Australia's batsmen. Plant the f**king front foot down infront of you with your head over your leading knee.. <deleted> me..

Luckily I have muted the phone and myself, Central's customers would be none to impressed by present thought vocabulary...

James Anderson is not helping our cause. Maybe we should give the Australian women's team a run

Good to see our bowlers willing to sacrifice their wicket cos they are in a hurry to get back out there for a go at England in the second innings.
