BANGKOK: -- The "Phi Ta Khon" ghost festival celebrated in Loei's Dan Sai district, "Suad O-ae Wihanrai" traditional chanting and "Pha Khao Ma" chequered cloth, are among items that the Department of Cultural Promotion plans to register as part of the Kingdom's cultural heritage this year.

The department chief Chai Nakhonchai yesterday said that the Intangible Cultural Heritage draft legislation would soon be submitted for the Cabinet's consideration in order to support Thailand's participation in the Unesco Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Chai went on to say that the committee for national heritage registration had considered 102 items this year and would be able to announce at least 50 items as part of Thailand's national heritage in seven areas including: performing arts; craftsmanship; literature; sports; social rituals and festivals; knowledge and practices about nature and the universe; and language.

Those that have already passed preliminary selection include the "Mahoree" Thai grand orchestra; "Lam Tat", a style of singing; "Fawn Lep", a northern traditional dance; and "Khon", an ornamental dance headdress.

Thailand's heritage, lying, cheating, stealing, and corruption. Got to protect that.

The image just shows the Chinese heritage. It'll have to accept it is an amalgamation of a lot of things; a mixed heritage influenced by other creeds/societies/slave trades, nomads, refugees.

What a rude thing to say.

Like anyone would want to steal half the crap they call culture.

Thank you three times wai.gif

I'm very disappointed that decorative vegetable carving has not been included, truly a unique Thai gift to world civilisation.

Protect from who?

They only seem under threat for commercialisation from themselves.

Bingo.

I always read they have to protect their culture, but who is trying to destroy it? They are.

It started when they ignored one of the most basic fundamentals of Buddhism, the path of non-attachment. And they screwed that up big time. It went downhill from there.

Never mind the local detail, get into UNESCO, so far this year 27 meetings on intangible cultural heritage, all over the place, what a great quango to be in, that's why business class stays alive.

On a similar note. I chat with a Thai Buddhist monk on facebook, who's trying to stop tourists from buying Buddha related souvenirs. He say's it's disrespectful to the Buddha. I mentioned it to him, that the Buddha has been dead for approx. 2600 years and probably doesn't give a shit.. besides the fact that every other shop in Thailand sells Buddha statues, amulets and other artifacts and wouldn't it be disrespectful for them to be selling these things? But evidently, it's only disrespectful for farangs to be buying them and not respectful Thai's to be selling them. <deleted>? Amazing Thailand.
