zulethe Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I was wondering if anyone kept their U.S. cell phone and successfully had google voice forward calls to you. I currently have ATT pay as you go and I have no idea if this will work and I have a bunch of job interviews lined up and I dont want to miss the call, i.e., I don't want it to go to voice mail. If so, how was the signal? Do you get zinged for some heavy international charges? I know it depends on the service you have but I'm just wondering what others have experienced Also would it be better to just buy a local thai phone and have the calls forwarded to that? The ATT guy said that I bought a plan that costs $5 for 250 minutes (international plan) but I don't know if that applies in my situation (GV forwarding thing). He didn't exude a lot of confidence in his answers and my long search has been fruitless. thanks for your help
lomatopo Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 You have a Google Voice ten digit telephone number? You have an AT&T pre-paid cell phone number/SIM? Which number will you be expecting calls on? What kind of phone do you have? Please be very precise with make, model. And now I am guessing you will be traveling to Thailand? You do understand that there is a time difference which means the prospective employers may well be calling you night-time here? Where will you be staying in Thailand? Will you have WiFi? It would probably be best to get a local Thai SIM card, and then forward your AT&T number in the U.S. to the Thai SIM card. This might be a bit expensive. I have a Google Voice ten digit telephone number, and I use GrooVeIP on my Android phone here. If someone dials my GV number then it will ring here in Thailand. GrooVeIP is free for WiFI, the paid version works with 3G. You cannot forward a GV call to an international number. I guess I still don't really understand what it is that you are trying to do?

Google voice ten digit telephone number - check ATT pay as you go cell model Alcatel 510A. I just purchased this as my new phone which GV will transfer calls to. I'll be staying in Bangkok, will hav Wifi and understand the time difference...I NEED to be able to answer their calls...it's an extremely competitive job and if I don't answer I may lose the job. Since you are succussfully getting your calls forwarded to your android with that app...I think this answers my question that yes, it will work. Also, since I'm only expecting two to three short calls max, money should not be an issue so when I get there, I'm going to do a test run (have a friend call me at multiple times during the day and at differenet locations around the city) to test service reliability as well as billing. Does this sound reasonable?
thrilled Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I just give out new number when I get A thai sim are.Might cost some extra money.Less complicated
lomatopo Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I think I understand what you hope to do: forward your Google Voice to your AT&T pre-paid number? Is that correct? If so, it will not work as there is no international roaming with an AT&T pre-paid SIM and/or GoPhone. T-Mo offers int'l roaming with pre-paid to many countries, but still not Thailand AFAIK. Again more details rather than fewer may yield recommendations. With a PC on WiFi running GV, or a an Android Smartphone on WiFi running GrooVeIP, in bound calls to your Google Voice number would ring through to Thailand.

Yes, that is exactly what I'm trying to do. I'm so pissed. I researched this, called at@t was told to go to one of their "company" stores for expert advice and the so called professional gave me the wrong advice. I should have known better. It sounded too good to be true. Oh, well, thank you,at least now I can sleep through the night rather than waiting for a phone to ring that never will. And as my friends have said...most companies calling to set up a job interview should leave a message one would think. thanks again for taking the time and saving me more aggravation. Zulethe

Pib Posted July 8, 2013 Posted July 8, 2013 Assuming you will have a mobile "data" connection via 3G/Wifi also vs just a voice minutes conection, put the GrooVeIP App on your phone which is nothing more than a interface/front end for your GoogleVoice number. Then you can use GrooVeIP (acts/looks just like the Phone function on you smartphone) to make "and receive calls" via your GoogleVoice number.
