Workers 'cheated'
The Nation

SATUN: -- About 200 Myanmar workers believed to have been cheated by Malaysian labour brokers were abandoned near Tarutao Island off the southern province of Satun, police said yesterday.

Pol Lieutenant Chaipol Yaiying said the 200 Myanmar people, including some heavily pregnant women, were found at Pornchai Gulf, which is often used by fishing boats to wait out storms.

The migrant workers told police they did not know where they were, were not from the same group and had not come together. Some, who had arrived via Penang and Langkawi in Malaysia were supposed to have been taken by their agents to Australia, while others who could speak Malay were meant to be destined for Malaysia. The former group said they were charged Bt60,000 for the agents' commission and to cover travel costs.

Police suspected the Burmese workers were duped by the same agent or network and deserted at the same place. Satun immigration officials and police would take their records before sending them home.

Customs Dept targets 111 billion baht revenue this year

BANGKOK, 8 July 2013 (NNT) – The Customs Department is targeting to reap up to 111 billion baht from taxes and tariffs this year, thanks to the depreciation of the Thai baht against other currencies.

According to Yuttana Yimgarund, Deputy Director General of the Customs Department, the department is expecting to collect 111 billion baht in customs tariffs this year. For the past 3 quarters, the department has collected around 80 billion baht, which is 2 percent higher than the projected number.

The deputy director also expected to collect another 400 billion baht from revenue and excise taxes. He said the tremendous amount was a result of the depreciation of the Thai baht, enabling the export sector to increase its export volume.

Finally, the deputy director said he had ordered department executives to regularly check all documents related to export in order to prevent corruption, while urging the 35 exporting-related agencies to improve their efficiency for the benefit of the country’s export-import sector.

Two Thai crew injured in Korean aircrash: Foreign Minister
By English News

BANGKOK, July 8 - Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul on Monday confirmed that two Thai crew members onboard the Asiana Airlines aircraft were injured when it crashed at San Francisco airport Saturday.

The minister's confirmation followed the South Korean carrier's Boeing 777 slamming onto the runway while landing at the airport killing two Chinese students and injuring more than one hundred passengers.

He said Thai consul-general in Los Angeles reported that two Thai female cabin crew are now hospitalised in San Francisco.

The two victims were identified only by their nicknames, Mew and Eve, the minister said, adding that Ms Mew suffered minor injuries.

Mr Surapong said, however, that Ms Eve is in critical condition and doctors are not allowing any visits. The Thai Association of Northern California talked with Ms Eve's parents in Thailand to seek their approval for further medical treatment.

Regarding the bombing at the historic Bodhgaya Buddhist temple complex in India, a popular site for Thai Buddhist pilgrims, Mr Surapong said no Thais were wounded in the attack.

Bodhgaya is a town 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of Patna, the capital of Bihar state.

He added the Thai consul-general in Kolkata submitted an urgent letter to the Indian authorities urging them to help ensure the safety of Buddhist temple, monks and Thai nationals staying in the area and nearby.

A series of nine bombings in which The Indian government has condemned as a "terror attack" occurred at the world-renowned pilgrimage destination on Sunday morning, injuring two Buddhist monks. (MCOT online news)
