Do They Only Cheat In The Northeast?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Thought twice, if and where to post this. I leave it to the mods, to put it in the teaching section, if this "phenomenon" does exist nationwide.

I've posted it in Isaan forum , as I'm living and working here and I'm aware that many foreigners here are working as teachers

. I'm doing almost all for my school, from hiring foreigners to gate duty, preparing kids for all sorts of competitions.

I held various seminars for Thai English teachers, then school directors, tourist police etc.,..

Here's what really bugs me a lot.

I've just heard the truth from a very reliable source. Somebody who's in the system, a teacher who brings her kids to competitions.

I'm aware that many foreigners prepare students for such events, but I never knew ( or wanted to know?) the truth.

Not the students, who deliver the best speech, spelling bee result, multi skills etc...usually "win" such a competition.

It's like almost everything here. Money rules.

They pay good money to "let a student win", in the last case, ( which I have proof) 60,000 baht to the judges and her kid had won.

That gives me a strange feeling, that I'd like to throw up now, as we've got many upcoming events in a few weeks. Is that just in the northeast of this country, or nationwide?

Thanks for any clarification.- wai2.gif

It's not just prevalent to Issan or Thailand.

Corruption is widespread across Asia.

Next time you are rushed into A & E, prey the surgeon didn't pay his way through Medical College.

Welcome toThailand!

I may not have been to Thailand before but I've been to China many times.

Similar cultures, money is everything, including face.

The higher the official, the higher the bribe.

I once initiated discussions with a major US university for a Thai citizen to obtain an honorary doctorate -- and the university expressed initial interest. I was talking with this person's son and he asked me: How much does it cost to get the honorary doctorate?

I responded : You could not BUY such an honor from a university like this in the USA even if you tried. His response was: Well if it doesn't cost anything, what good is it?

This is one of the more pathetic aspects of Thai culture, particularly when it comes to competitions involving kids or sport. Parents become rabid idiots, "officials" cheats openly, overage kids are allowed to compete with younger kids and violence often occurs. You can see all this at what should be a friendly under 8s school football (soccer) match, a tae kwon do contest, in fact any sport or even as you say, a spelling bee.

Why? Zero self esteem for the parents is my guess. No feeling of self worth, so they have to live their wasted lives through their kids.

Try and fight a court case in Thailand. Every step involves money. That means only the rich can win cases. The poor loose because they can't pay. Typically the poor loose all their assets to the state.

I fail to understand how it is possible for a spelling bee.

Ask the judges.

At the height of a political corruption trial, the prosecuting attorney attacked a witness. "Isn't it true," he bellowed, "that you accepted five thousand dollars to compromise this case?"

The witness stared out the window, as though he hadn't hear the question.

"Isn't it true that you accepted five thousand dollars to compromise this case?" the lawyer repeated loudly.

The witness still did not respond.

Finally, the judge leaned over and said, "Sir, please answer the question."

"Oh," the startled witness said, "I thought he was talking to you." cheesy.gif

I've had to judge a few high school speech competitions here in Ubon.

The only thing I've been offered is coffee and cake.

I've seen no evidence of corruption in the school English competitions etc myself. Haha as above, no one has offered me anything more than coffee and a few biscuits when I've been judging, and the winners I've seen always seemed to be deserving.

Doesn't mean it doesn't happen of course, but I don't think it's that widespread (Or perhaps I'm just lucky and my area is fine)

Well, I must admit I was expecting a completely different topic.... whistling.gif

Silly me! I thought Thailand was in Asia rolleyes.gif

What concerns me is

  1. This acceptance of corruption is passed onto the kids as normal behaviour
  2. That the kids learn that money buys you everything where as hard work and ability gets you last place
  3. If these kids move to another country they are not even competitive with the locals who had had to put in the hard slog to get their achievements.
  4. For Thailand as a nation it is self defeating as Thailand cannot compete on a level playing field.

Diyer, I think your contribution to the discussion is as valuable as anybody elses.

And the latest mega corruption scandal breaks in ... England ! (G4/tagging case.) Is the UK part of Asia? Some of it is, if you believe the redtops.

Integrity, or rather a complete lack of it across the board. There appears not to be a corresponding word in Thai language. However, well educated and well travelled Thais in my experience can show they at least understand what the word means.

Maybe we just run/ran in different crowds but the TGs I know, if you offered to take them upon first meeting to a 'decent' 350 baht per night (or per session) hotel room, they might use the line Dustin Hoffman uttered (in drag) as Tootsie in the movie of the same name:

Listen, you take your hands off me or I'll knee your balls right through the roof of your mouth!

Pardon the above -- that was a post for the Farang Pub forum I didn't notice that appeared here -- Maybe it applies here as well as it definitely addresses 'cheating' of another sort.

Guess it's only happens, when three Thai judges are cooking their soups.-w00t.gif

I agree about this place shooting itself in the foot internationally. When I was doin' my thing in the UK, many people (and I) found little reason to value qualifications gained round here. I have met a very few who were up for it, most gave the game away very quickly. Even the ones with degrees.

Not many Thai's seem interested in working abroad anyway, and the language barrier is a biggy.

Let 'em rip each other off eh?

The cheating I can comprehend, but why do many people here confuse lying with humour?

Only joking...........................
