Two days ago me and my wife who is Thai were sitting in the garden when a brand new white pick up truck with blacked out windows pulled up in front of the house,a Thai man who was about 5 foot three inches wearing a tee-shirt with the Glock handgun company logo, brown tight Police style trousers and a pair of patent shiny boots came into the garden and produced a magazine with policemen in wheelchairs and asked me to donate 4000 baht for a wheelchair or 10000 baht for other equipment,my wife asked him to produce ID which he did but my wife thought it was bogus.I know some police here on Samui and I said to him I have never seen him before,my wife also pointed out to him that our house is covered by cctv,he quickly realised he was getting no money out of us and left quickly. My question is did anyone else get a visit, and is the normal way for Thai Police to collect money for their benevolent fund.?

Everyone has the right to own such pick up, dress like they want, ASK for money... Your right to say "no"...

But produce fake police ID is illegal, yes. BTW seems he didn't use that trick until your wife asked...

Probably bogus. This scam (and similar) was quite common a few years back, but I have not heard of it recently.

You probably did the correct thing. When they 'hit' our small estate some years ago (collecting for the Army + Police to contribute for a present for His Majesty the King's birthday) I too took photos of them. It was amazing how quickly a pick up truck can go backwards!

if you know some police why don't you ask them rather than us?

I was just putting out what happened to warn other people who live here to be on the lookout, hence the description of the car and what the "policeman" was wearing.I thought that was what these forums were for.

Get the license plate, photograph the offender and then go and file a police complaint. They won't take kindly to someone muscling in on their business.

A photo of the incident will do just a copy off your cctv footage post so we can see.

Unfortunately we only put the CCTV on when we are out of the house, obviously after this incident I will leave it on 24/7.Even if it was on it does not cover the street so we would not have picked up his number plate.Although the description of the "policemans" car ,short stature, and clothes might give people a clue if he shows at their house. The incident happened in Bangrak just off the bon kai road (ghost road).

He came to my house a couple of days ago. Showed me his ID and said he was from the Royal Thai Army Police or something similar. Starting talking about the bombs in Hat Yai and needing to pay 4000 THB for replacement limbs for bomb victims, or 2000 THB for oxygen tanks. I soon sent him on is way.

If anyone tried that in UK the public would be outraged:

Given the loss of an on duty Police officer barely 2 weeks ago I would hope the locals see it the same way.

i was under the impression he was asking a question, not providing a heads up.

oh wait, he was.

definatly a scam. police real or not are not alloud to approach people and ask them for money. If they did and they were real police. they would be reported and not only would they be in trouble but their boss who guarnetees them shall also have a problem.

did his car have any visable signitures such as scratches, stickers, was it a 4 door 2 door, clean did the man have any scars of tattoos?

if that was in soi bon gai area then you might want to take what you have if you get a chance to Plai leam police station as they shall not be happy

i reckin these people study the news and it is a big story about these policemen getting shot and stabbed a bit of a coindicence that someone could be using this shocking news to push open people up to donating. lets see if people start collecting for raja ferry lol

to be in a registered charity one would need a registered charity number lisence. it works similar to the way a company is set up only the income goes into the charity rarther than for profit.

I cannot imiage that the TessaBaan would grant a lisence for people to go door to door asking for money as there are too many scams of this nature.

most charities you have to go into the set up charity offices to donate. in other words you have to go to them not them come to you.

I think samui rescue have once a year when they walk around the streets for 3 days and people come up to donate while they are walking around.

the same with Thai monks. They are also alloud so go out in big groups of people once a year and let people come to donate.

I would suggest giving him 50 baht and asking him for his phone number as you have friends that would also like to donate as they love giving money to charity.

Ask for his phone number. Then go out and well use you imgination......................

definatly a scam. police real or not are not alloud to approach people and ask them for money.

And as we all know, police in Samui always obey the law.

That's not the point the point is that this sort of behaviour is not really tolerated

I cannot comment on what the police would do if the man was caught as that is there job

All I know is that they are not aloud to do collections door to door unless through the police box

Anyway I think that most police are not in such as bad financial status that they would need to lower themselves to begging

If that is the case then no wonder crime is high
