drove one for a couple of days.

Good:

good feeling, looks bigger inside than it looks outside, comfortable, excellent fuel economy (I drove more than a hundred Km and din't have to refuel before giving it back to the rental).

Bad:

engine is very weak, when flooring it the sound made me worry it would explode any moment

no space for luggage, can't take 4 travelers with a suitcase each.

general impression: very good for the price, good little compact car for use in a city

Dude, you could have written any of the reviews I've been reading!

Guess they were spot on.

I do understand though that they now have a 1.5 l, 97hp engine. I expect your rental was a1.2l, 79 hp. And believe it or not, the 1.5 gets better mileage, reported at up to 60 mpg.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't think a 1.5 micra is available in Thailand. There's a supercharged 1.2 overseas but even that isn't available here. If we had a 1.5 then it would be more expensive as it wouldn't qualify as an ecocar. There are stronger 4cyl engines in the suzuki swift and honda brio (about 91 hp). Mitsubishi mirage has the same powered engine as the march, but the mirage weighs a lot less, so it may be quicker. Delivery times on the mirage should be quicker than the others too, and it's cheaper also, even for the top model (except for brio which is 508K).

I looked at the March, but ended up buying a Mazda 2 sedan. It is a great car, will easily cary 4 adults with an over night bag each and you could fit in a couple of golf bags. I'm constantly amazed at how much you can get in the trunk.

Ouch.

Price is a consideration, as the car really won't see much use.

Get the cheapest (auto) then. I think about 430K for the march. Cars will depreciate here whether you drive them or not. As you expect, the cheapest car will have the lowest total depreciation (not thinking about percentages). The base model manual mazda 2 would be about the same or a bit more than the top model auto march. I think there is about 150K difference comparing their top models. The march will use quite a bit less petrol than a mazda 2 also, so running costs will be lower.

I think the 1.2 liter base model is priced 388k, cheapest mazda 2 sedan is 550k

Least it's a Nissan. Much better build quality than say Kia or Daewoo or Hyundai for example. 1.2 litre automatic would likely be sluggish.

Had my March for 2 years now and it's fantastic! In my opinion you don't need anything more powerful than the 1.2 how fast can you go in traffic!!

yes, inside the city it's ok - on Sukhumvit, one has really to get used to the lack of power when overtaking (or not overtaking for that matter...), and on longer highway trips it is a game of patience.

I have been on many long distance trips in my March, I never had a problem with power or overtaking, it's all down to knowing what you have and how to use it, if you are expecting the March to behave like a 2 ltr car then the March is not for you, it a great car, cheap to run and cheap to maintain! One of the best cars I have ever had!!

I wrote earlier that it's a great little car for the city!

I'm not disappointed by the low power of the car, because I don't expect more. Just saying things as they are, if I had a long road trip to make, I'd choose another car if possible.

OTOH, last year I had a vios 1.5 liter Vios "E" and it was also quite gimped, and maxed out at approx 150-160 on the highway with a motor noise that made me glad it was a rental.

:-)

The March is a great little car for the city for transporting 4 or 5 persons without luggage or 3 persons with luggage. On the roads and highways, expect it to perform similarly to a loaded minibus.

Base model is without airbags and is MT . I paid 500k for one of the top models AT.
