I love the drive from Chiang Kham to Nan via the 1148 and the 1080. We have done the 1091 but found it much more ordinary than the 1148. I seem to remember it being the same distance as our drive to Chiang Mai at around 230 to 240 km. We are east of town so Chiang Mai is a three hour drive for us instead of the two hours if you live closer to town. Nan was about the same.

If you Google the drive on Google Maps they will give you estimated distance and time but it is such a beautiful drive it would be a shame to put a clock on it. There are some really great routes around Nan but there is a tendency for the high mountain roads to washout during the rainy season. The drive there is the best part of Nan, in my opinion, so just slow down and enjoy the ride.

This was taken at a viewpoint on the 1148.

Landslides can look like this but signs will tell you well in advance if there is any problem.

Some sections are amazing so on balance Nan is a great place to go for a drive.

Fortunately these are not very common.

Villagefarang, you had a hell of an adventure in that drive. LOL I would love to do that kind of drive too.

Lovely scenery and I'm sure fantastic fresh air.

I prefer the air above the car not under itsmile.png

I agree, having more than the customary amount of air under your car can be a bit disconcerting.wink.png

I have driven most of the Northern Thailand roads in a truck and SUV and a Ninja 650, so have been over most of them several times over the years. If you like that kind of stuff, I have a couple of trip reports on my blog, mixed in with the other stuff of course. The link can be found on my Profile Page.

I came across a similar stretch of road coming from Fang through to Mae Suai a couple of years back.

It was a long drive to go around it so we just crept past, luckily there was more room off road on the "safe" side.

I sure hope the OP didn't fall into that sinkhole.wink.png I am sure it would be a lovely drive this time of year.smile.png
