dont know if this has been about for a while but my wife just told me of a friend that had their car stolen. Apparently they got in and started it up to drive away and realized the back window was covered in paper so they got out to pull it off and as they did someone jumped in and took off in it. Pretty novel way of doing it but thought a bit of warning might be better than anyone else getting caught out this way.

Another common one is to shunt into the back of the car that is to be stolen, as you get out they get in, never leave keys in, engine on, simple.

They really steal cars here ? Never heard about it ? Or maybe only cheap Japanese cars for parts ? It seems that there is no market for stolen luxury cars as Benz or BMW.

Or just buy good insurance.

Insurance here only covers you up to 80% of the value of the vehicle

When you buy a new vehicle they will only insure it for 80% of its value and drop the value every year

Hopefully the paperboy can sell the car for enough to buy a new bicycle.

So don't buy it and get nothing.

I pay attention to what is going on around me, but I'm not going to get caught up worrying about getting my car stolen.

Yes and they do a lot. Two huge garage were shut down near my home on Ladprao road by be the bib.

The funny thing is the one near chokchai is just a hundred meter away from chokchai police station. rolleyes.gif

Frequent. The normal trick is either strip for parts quickly (done in a container to block tracking devices) or taken across a border and sold as is or after the identity is changed.

I have more faith in the "Honest Lads" here in Issan. Never heard of Car Jacking or Stealing, they are often too busy knocking of Motorcycles and transhipping them to a ready market, over the river, in nearby Laos. I have been known to leave my Pick-up with motor running (Air Con.) whilst I do my shopping in the main street. Depends If you reside in peacefull Issan or one of those horrible Cesspits, called Tourist resorts.

Im driving a 16 year old Soluna so I figure it aint worth stealing.Mind you back in the UK it would be gone in seconds because it would be so easy to steal .

I haven't heard of it in Isaan but it probably happens. An old car might be tempting for kids though particularly if it's owned by a falang. They might assume the owner has plenty of money for a new one and not so much fuss will be made unlike if it were something expensive. Just take it to their village and lots of fun to be had.

It certainly doesn't hurt to be on your guard for this type of thing and prevention is better than relying on insurance which will probably be time consuming.

Motor bikes are being stolen here all the time. It's only a ten minute drive to the Cambodian border. I've only ever heard of one vehicle being stolen and that was years ago, but I daresay it happens occasionally.

Or just buy good insurance.

Does the insurance company take the paper off the back window or post someone to sit in the vehicle while you do it?

They had a video floating around facebook a few months ago of a guy hanging a string of cans on the back of a car then hiding behind another car while the owner got into her car to leave. When she heard the awful racket as she pulled out of her spot she stopped and got out to check the rear and the guy hopped in and drove off. It looked like CCTV footage but since it was in Thai I'm not sure if it was real or more along the lines of a public safety video but it was clever.

Just a quick one,,,

Mine and my girlfriends car was stolen from her house in buriram 3 months ago,,

We reported it the following morning to the local plod.

It went quiet for about a month with no sign of our car.

4 days ago she received a call from someone in the kap choeng district, which is where you can make your passport on the Cambodian border.

The person said that they have our car and will release it for 300,000 baht,,

We contacted the local plod again with the information.

We received a call from plod again, saying that there was nothing he could do as these people were an organised gang and that if I want my car back I should pay the 300,000 baht.

Anyone got any other ideas,,

That area isn't very big,and I think the car would be easy to find.

My girlfriend doesn't want me to go as she fears I'll get myself into more trouble,,,

Should I just say bye bye to my brum brum???post-200107-13906024267555_thumb.jpgpost-200107-13906024418031_thumb.jpg

may be this will make you surprised, but they smuggle to Laos stolen cars also.

If you don't want to turn off aircon, take 2 keys with you.

Speaking of car theft in Isaan, some loser posted earlier today in another thread how his car was stolen in some Isaan province, and then the thieves called his wife's cellphone (which they just "happened" to have) demanding a ransom! Clearly a case of the wife teaming up with her"brother" (first/real husband or boyfriend) to rip off the farang, methinks...
