PHUKET: Governor Maitree Intusut went to Kamala and Kathu Police Stations yesterday afternoon (October 8) to be briefed on the ground about the security situation as the high season approaches.

At Kathu Police Station – which is in Patong – he was shown statistics from 2011-2013 revealing that during the low season, people from outside Phuket – other Thais, expatriates and tourists – total from 36,000 to 46,000. However in the high season the number rises to 50,000 to 65,000 per day.

The number of people registered as living in Patong is just 19,444.

The population is highly cosmopolitan, with police records showing foreign criminals and victims of crime came from 64 nationalities in the three years.

“The problem of Phuket is complex because we have to deal with foreigners and outsiders, which is two-thirds of the population” Gov Maitree told senior officers. “When crimes take place, please tell me where did [the perpetrators] come from because in most cases, they are not local Phuket people.”

Turning to exploitation of endangered species of wildlife, the governor said, “We have arrested many people but the penalty is very light. I will tell the central government that there must be more severe punishments available. None of the touts are Phuket locals.”

He also discussed non-criminal aspects of security, especially roads. “We will be adding more warning signs [about bends and steep hills] along certain roads, such as the one between Kamala and Cherng Talay.

“Many foreigners were not familiar with the roads here, so we have to enforce the wearing of helmets. If you don’t wear a helmet … we will deal with you according to the law. Also, because of the heightened risks from drunk driving during New Year, there will be checkpoints to check blood-alcohol levels.

On the sea, he stressed, fast action to save people is essential. “For marine safety, if someone is at risk of drowning, the faster they are rescued and received medical help, the less the risk that they will die.

“Safety is essential to making tourists feel satisfied and comfortable.”

Well of course most of the criminals in Phuket are outsiders.....maybe because they know that the BIB in Phuket are the most corrupted in the whole of Thailand. Where else would they get better protection by the BIB's?

However, the majority of foreign criminals in Phuket, can only be criminals thanks to the corruption that exists amongst officials on the island.

This post has me in awe... Such an abundance of wisdom and determination in such a small article. With Mr. Intusut at the helm, Phuket will certainly steer into safer waters...

The best solution for this guy is to just allow Phuket born people in Phuket (19,444 in Patong).

Do NOT allow outsiders (Thai or farang) in your 'beautiful' Phuket.....

You will see that most, if not all of Phukets problem are solved with this simple rule: No outsiders in Phuket!

He is clearly speaking not only about 'foreigners' but also about Thais from outside Phuket. That is his main point. He is saying that the majority of criminals are from outside Phuket given the relatively small size of the registered Phuket population. Probably most are from other parts of Thailand (unless you want to argue that people from Phuket are more predisposed to criminal behaviour than Thais from other parts of the country or that foreigners are mostly responsible for the crime there.) And he wants to verify this assumption by having police record/track the origin of criminals/suspects. Not completely unreasonable...

Quite possible. In all my years, I've never met a taxi or tuk tuk driver in Bangkok who was actually born there. People go where the jobs are...

Fine, but the way I read the article was that he was downplaying the Thai criminal side of things by saying that they came from outside Phuket, as if that makes much difference. The vast majority of ANY criminals in Thailand are the Thai's themselves.

He would obviously stop crime by around 75% if he banned outside people coming into Phuket.
