Are Malarone Malaria Tablets easisly available in Thailand for Backpackers?

Sent from my GT-I9300 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

No they are restricted in Thailand, you need to go to a hospital or travel clinic and see a doctor to get them.

I know for sure they are cheaper and easier to buy in the UK. They cost about 150 Baht per tablet in Thailand. I believe they cost about 2 pounds each in the UK as opposed to at least 3 pounds each in Thailand.

Do you really even need these ?

You can buy them online in the UK, not sure about elsewhere.

I would need them when travelling in Myanmar or Cambodia. In the UK the cost approximately £200 for 60days so wondered if they were more readily available there.

That sounds expensive, the price is usally about 2 pound per tablet/day - check http://www.londontravelclinic.co.uk/prices/anti-malarials.aspx or many of the other travel clinics in the UK. They are only 1.70 each at the one I linked.

They are not freely available nor cheap in Thailand - even the pharmacies that sell Valium, Xanax, etc under the counter without a prescription don't sell Malarone.

So it will be a lot more hassle for you to get them in Bangkok and cost more. I suggest you buy them in the UK while you have the chance.

Edit : That link above only lists the Paediatric dose for children at 1.70 each - if you do some searching you will find them cheaper in the UK.

Actually you do not need them in Cambodia, malaria transmission there is limited to a specific, heavily forested areas where it is very unlikely you would be at night. Towns are fine and >95% of the villages likewise.

Myanmar also no need unless for some reason you are going to be off the beaten track and in jungle which is not wise for a lot of reasons.

Doxycycline would be recommended from any travel clinic here in Thailand but as Sheryl said, chances are small and, if combined with proper insect repellent precautions, would even be less. Best to get to a travel clinic with your itinerary.
