SuperCheap smoke, foul smell affecting Phuket residents
The Sunday Nation

Phuket administrative organisation member Kanthapat Pisitkhunanon yesterday urged related agencies to speedily clear up the 30-rai (4.8 hectare) area devastated by the island's largest-ever fire at the main SuperCheap store. He said smoke and foul smells were coming from the site due to chemical-polluted water - and this was a serious hazard for nearby residents.

In a meeting to discuss the fire yesterday, Phuket Governor Maitree Inthusut was told that only 40 per cent of the site was accessible by officials. Investigators are attempting to collect evidence in some areas, while a team of fire fighters have remained on hand in case there is any recurrence of the fire.

Meanwhile, store executives confirmed that 3,000 employees would keep their jobs and be dispatched to other branches, while the store's garden centre on Soi Lak Kong Si would be turned into a temporary goods store.

About 21 people with previous respiratory problems in nearby households, had been affected by smoke and chemical inhalation, while 22 homes were damaged by soot and the heat after the blaze shattered windows of houses closest to the fire.

How many died? have not seen any reports.

All the reports so far say there have been none found. But obviously still early as they mentioned only 40% is accessible. Just hope for the best.

With none reported missing it really looks like no one died.

Reportable the 18 year old cashier is yet to be accounted for and Super Cheap are closed ranks on the matter regarding anyone else potentially missing by erecting Chinese walls to the media as a consequence. What amazes me the most, is that they that don’t show any remorse for the fire and appear to immediately want to return to the same unorthodox way of selling food in a cow barn type environment.

You would think that lessons would be learnt from such an incident in order to avoid repeat occurrences.

According to the reports all are accounted for. Where did you get your information?

According to Phuket Gazette 20/10/13, 18 year old Siriporn Khunpetthongrat still remains missing.

Check the site that can not be mentioned, more up to date information there. The information you refer to has been updated already on 'the other site' and was from yesterday, 19 October, 17.45 hours.

I know the reports have come up with nothing yet but I find it hard to believe that with all the people that died in the Tiger Disco fire that no one died here... I smell a cover up coming.

In local social meda, they say its a massive coverup not to scare visitors just before the tourist high season. I guess when it comes to rumors in Thailand, there is no smoke without a fire (pun intended)

Yeah, my wife mentioned seeing on social media that there were bodies, but no official reports. I dont deny that there is a cover up but this country really needs to put an end to coverups and point the fingers else where (ghosts included). If that is true about protecting the 'image (face?)' of high season season one would have to think... how many tourists make a trip to Super Cheap? But in general it seems like 75% of thai structures are fire hazards so there is no need to coverup.

The officials here are just setting themselves for a 'loss of face' of EPIC proportions when some decides to make the real information public. All they have to do is say that it was a major tragedy and they will vow to enforce fire safety standards so a tragedy like this doesn't happen again and show us the real information.
