Chalong Bay Shame

I went for a walk along Chalong Bay this morning and I was disgusted at what I saw. There is plastic bottles and garbage all over the beach. Imagine what the thousands of tourists that transit this area daily think? Also where is all that money going that the pier users have to pay? Isnt it 20 - 30 baht per person? Multiply that by tens of thousands and I am sure there could be some money set aside for a couple of beach cleaners

Most of the ones that do think take the attitude...

The beach around the pier is not the piers responsibility. (The pier is managed by PPAO).

The SEEK (Society, Environment, Economy, Knowledge) organization of Phuket is making great strides at getting daily beach cleaners assigned to each Phuket beach, partially funded by tourism sector businesses, partially by local government, as well as organizing mass beach clean-up days. The last time I spoke to one of the SEEk directors, Chalong was without sponsors but next on the list for this program. Care to sponsor? You can contact them on their website.

Well, we all know what the tourists are going to go home and say to their friends and family about it.

There are many cheap package holidays on offer in this country, and region, without the dirty beaches.

As for "Calong Bay Shane" - I think he is either a lousy typer, or had one too many to drink when he posted. :)

Since most of the tourists anymore are Chinese and Russians, I don't think they care about litter.
Especially in China.

Reminds me of a trip I took from Bejing to Chengdu on the train and refused to open my window to throw out my garbage like everyone else (all Chinese people except my friend and I),
I waited and eventually found a garbage can at the other end of the car.

3 hours later, a floor-sweeping woman got to the can, opened the window and emptied the can out of the window of the moving train!

They don't care!

Russia wasn't nearly as bad when I travelled across there on the Trans-Siberian train, but it was dirtier than western Europe or America.

When I travel with my family (Thai) in the states, and they see litter, they always say: "Look daddy, Chinese people must have been here"

But yes, I agree with the OP. It is a problem. I care.

I think the answer is to install garbage cans along the beach and somehow get businesses to pay to have them emptied by advertising on them.

I've said this before though and the work permit problem always comes up.

I do see paid workers cleaning up around Nai Harn lake the past few years. and it's made a huge difference.

Even better, I sometimes see school kids in large groups cleaning up. This is what really will help as the adults (THai) don't seem to know it's a bad thing to litter)

^ Fiddle you just reminded me of the time I saw a woman on the back of a motorbike with one of those white with green lettering "Save the Earth" shirts we see around, no doubt handed out free at some eco-function she had attended. She was eating from a styrofoam package and plastic bag. As soon as she finished, tossed onto the road.

Great, not only do the dive masters "flick their butts off the boats" but also take a dump of the side off the boat.

I suppose they will tell the tourists that it attracts fish.

i don't think it's just chalong beaches and pier, every beach seems to not be cleaned like in the old days, the whole place especially patong has turned into a tipping site, i think tourists will comment on the infrastructure, roads, public transport, prices along with the cleanliness of the beach areas. does anyone know the tourist figures for Phuket, not the air passenger traffic, as more Thai's fly and in the past it's massaged the figures.

Having owned small boats, without toilet facilities, for much of my life, I've had to do that on many occasions.

Usually I would spare the others by diving overboard, but not in deep water where the great whites lurk.

Always insisted it was good burly.

where does mr croc think the fish defecate, it's not like a sharks tale (the movie), i used to go fishing off shore and have no toilet facilities, i used to park my bum over the side and whistle, as far as i know it's bio degradable, the fish lap it up, thats why some fish come already seasoned, there's far worse things everyday being dumped in the sea by huge factories, industrial area's close to sea's, plastics are the scourge of the sea, how many fish go shopping with a plastic bag, so why is there so many in the water!!!!!
