Buying a Jeep?

Featured Replies

Coming to Samui in February and am thinking of staying for a while.

Is it feasible for me to buy a Secondhand Jeep?

How much would I pay and would it be easy to sell on after use.. OR Rent a Jeep for a reasonable rate. Last time I was in Samui, renting cost me 800 baht per day.. :-(

Easy to buy - but expensive.

Easy to sell - you will probably loose money on it as you will want a quick sell??? But you will have had the use of a jeep for xx months

Probably better to rent.

6 -12 months rental will cost anything between 12,000 and 15,000 baht per month - nothing else to pay except petrol.

The newest jeeps on the island are about 13 years old and most rentals are 20+ years old.

Other older cars available in that price range as well (with better suspension and better a/c).

Thanks for the information, will just need to weigh up the pros and cons of long term jeep rental against buying and selling on ( which should work out cheaper depending on my length of stay in Samui).

In your 'purchase' option, you will need to include repairs, road tax and insurances (4,000 - 5,000 baht?) as a cost. On older cars, full insurance is not usually available. 3rd party only.

If you rent -and the jeep does not start - one phone call and no cost.

If you purchase and it does not start - ???? There goes another day.

Quality of life v money. Good luck whichever option you choose.
