Will I get a better rate in maisai if i go through one of the bigger banks or would the airport have the same rates ?

I have only ever changed money in Bangkok and then I always bought baht so have no idea about buying foreign currency in Chiang Rai.

I found that the money changers here would not sell USD.

No idea about quids but probably the same.

You could try around the banks.

Are you passing through Bangkok?  If so Vasu on soi 7/1 always seems to have best rates and lots of cash.
