Who says I don't qualify?

I agree that my aptitude for puzzles is not great so I probably couldn't make it in to a puzzle solving organisation.

I know about MENSA because I have met more than a few people who do little else apart from bleat on and on about their IQ and MENSA membership. Its not the Freemasons you know. MENSA members aren't banned from talking about MENSA outside of their own circles mores the pity!

For me true intelligence is not defined by logic tests. I know many people who are damm clever yet would not be able to pass the MENSA tests merely because it is not in their particular scope of expertise.

I wonder how many MENSA members give too much creedence to their memberships and never stop to think they may have got their jobs simply because they came across as intelligent in the interview?

Looks like JD has little else going for him bar his MENSA membership poor chap!

alas ... again not a statement of someone that knows about Mensa PF ... there are various ways to qualify ... not just puzzle solving :D

But slagging off on things that one doesn't know about seems ... well .... :o

I've got to agree with Professor Fart ' s logic on this one...

IQ tests and pretty much any other multiple choice type exams are poor evaluations on one's ability to

A)survive in the real world

B)get laid in the real world

C) get paid in the real world

D) get laid with the maid unpaid in the real world

etc. etc. etc.

Personally, I'm no Bill Gates or Wally Walmart, George Bush, or Taksin Shinawatra....those are real brainers! not because of some stupid test score, but because of their ability to turn theory into practice and action, ultimately into $$$ monopolies...

With all that said, all my life, I've been able to ace tests and perform in the top 5 percent atleast in every exam / class I can recall...For United States Graduating seniors in 2001, my essay writing scored as the top 1 percent in all of USA, as my geography was top 3 percent, and on and on from middle school to Uni...top top top...trying not to brag here but the point I'm going to make is that most exams only show one's ability to take an exam, nothing more...

nearly every exam i took and aced since primary school, almost nothing was retained after the exam was finished (except the book/novel exams)

The few essential skills I do have and use to get paid and laid came from experience in the real world...street tests, not paper / electronic tests...

So when people start going off about these privelidged clubs, I want to vomit...kind of reminds me of the British Club...One time I was waiting to interview someone there, and sitting down near the pool and decided to order something to drink...The menue was ridiculously expensive...like 150 baht for a glass of lemonade or something...so I decided on a 100 baht glass of ice tea instead...only to be told that only members are alowd to order!!

As if I was asking for a freeby? So I can give a shit less of stuck up clubs who want to stratify themselves higher than the rest of the world...the sole cause of many problems in the world such as segregation, etc..

mensa is , as others have so correctly stated , just a club for insecure self opinionated intellectually snobbish backslappers and schoolboy nerds who can do jigsaw puzzles quicker than most.

it has no credence outside of its incestuous membership.

jdinasia

Mensa membership can stand one in good stead early in life .... and provide interesting people to talk with later on ...

so you are obviously not a member then.

Posted (edited)

jdinasia, do you feel that a Mensa member is better than everyone else due to their high IQ?

Edit.gif Not meant to be a trick question, but sincerely wondering if you feel it causes you to have a comparative attitude towards others.

nope ... never said nor implied that .... though I did imply that PF might be a bit insecure about a topic he knows little about ... <<you can add the exile to that>>

and yes PF knows I am teasing about 99% of this I think ....

Mensa came up as a group that actually does something with real IQ testing ... and not just from traditional tests....

PS. Tip ... look at the beginning of the mention of Mensa ... and how a couple of people that don't know about it responded :o

I guess it bears saying once more:

NEVER EVER give away your real email address to any site that asks for it, unless there is no way of avoiding it.

Create one or two email addresses with fake personal details if you want to use free services.

True, that's the ABC of signing up at various sights - never use your primary/real e-mail address.

I've got 72 Tickle newsletters in my extra yahoo e-mail, far more than all other combined.

<forgive me if I am remembering wrong!>

If you must know my college background...After moving here in 2002, I was working for a year and I decided to enroll at an accredited international university in bangkok from 2003-2005 for a total of 36 credits...with a final GPA of 3.9...In between being at the bottom of expat food chain as an english teacher barely making tuition on top of rent...

them days were hectic even as a bacholor...After volunteering at the Tsunami, something hit me carrying, moving, and working with heaps of decaying human flesh...Death didn't descern between those with higher social standings, degrees, bank accounts, and or social class...No prejudices ...the clever ones in such disasters are those who are tuned in to mother nature (i.e. sea gypsies)

Anyway, while I was stressing about scraping up my satang to pay for yet another, unbeneficial term at Uni, and with the new burden of being in a steady relationship, I made the decision not to kill myself trying to get a piece of paper...At the time, justified it as a temporary break...then nature hit me in the face and told me I was to be a dad...

So as of now, ain't got the time or money to go back to school, nor do I find it necesarry for my family's basic survival...If you have a problem with my decision and life, frankly I don't give a squat, unless you want to take some action and finance my tuition fully, I'll consider going back to school...otherwise, you can just drop the subject entirely

Huh. I'm Mensa eligible, but have never bothered to join. Mensa is a place where being smart is okay and all the people will get your jokes. I'm just not social, and Mensa IS primarily a social organization. I will admit to occasional frustration with people who can't figure out something I found simple, or who need to have something repeated to remember it. For women, IQ hiding can be a way of life, as most men simply don't want a wife who is substantially more intelligent than they are. I avoided that by simply refusing to enter into any relationship with a man whose intellect wasn't close to my own. Even just dating back in high school. Yeah, it narrows the pool a LOT, but smart people tend to find each other somehow. It's like gaydar for IQ.

Why is there such a long thread about this tickle web site?

I did the test with them about 18 months ago (got a great score!) and have been receiving emails from them since. It is a spam, preying on egos, and as such never allocates low scores.

What I'm most surprised about is GW exposing his mind so soon after his body!

Posted by What's His Name (I have never been good with names):

A high IQ is of very little significance as far as success in life is concerned.

Likely both little significance and more than we imagine, eh?

I am most skeptical of IQ tests and always have been but finally, at age 50 or so, a friend urged me to take the MENSA test and I agreed. I was most surprised when they assigned someone to actually come and administer and time the test and this guy (a Child Psychologist) was a real stickler and watched me like a hawk. After the test we had a very interesting conversation concerning the difference between those of high IQ and the 'average' Joe. His theory was that geniuses actually have more trouble with day to day communication with people (which I could absolutely relate to) because they think about different things than whether my socks match, or status or, as Einstein used to say, "My hair!"

When the results came back they showed that I scored 152 which sent me even further into skepticism. I mean, gimme a break; I quit school in the 10th year and joined the military. Not your usual sign of intelligence, right? :o

I decided to try the above-mentioned "Tickle" test, was initially dismayed over the information they wanted and the obvious slant of the site, but began it anyway.. And quit half-way through because I felt it was so, umm, grade school, ya know? Surely this "created by PhD's" test was created by Plainly hopeless Dingleberries and I wanted no part of it and wished that I could get my personal information back but...

Some people (such as myself) will fall for anything... :D

Your personality (as far as I can tell from your threads)

and attitude is leaving a huge mosaic picture for us to ponder..Here is a multiple choice puzzle for you that will teach you more about yourself than any Mensa test could do...

A) You were born with a silver spoon in your behind..Your parents were wealthy and spoon fed you through University. You are one of those guys that left home in his 20s possibly 30s even. You have trouble understanding other people in 'lower social circles' that don't share your common outlook on life.

or

:D Your parents were "Uni drop outs working without a degreee when they raised you, and you resent them for that because your life is miserable. And so now you resent anybody else who is born / breeds in that situation.

or

C) You are the reincarnated Buddha who knows the exact path to happiness, which involves a University Degree, Work Permit, 40th floor penthouse overpriced realestate, a bottle of some fancy French champagne, and a moldy piece of cheese in your refridgerator, which is stocked with the finest and most expensive imports that you could find at the Emporium.

or

D) You're a troll

So which one is it JD?? :o

Does not being able to spell disqualify you from being an "English" teacher?

Does not being able to spell disqualify you from being an "English" teacher?

For your information, I currently don't formally teach English. I have taught in the past, but as you might know, foreign language teachers aren't in demand for their spelling knowledge...besides, I'm not English, sologically, I can't be expected to speak and use proper English. As an American, it's encoded into my genes to use my lingual tools in whichever way suits me need, comprende essay?

BTW Jai Yen Yen, I could tell you something about your user name, and how you're misrepresenting the term, or in other words misusing the language...

this term isn't intended for those who provoke others into conflict and keep a cool response as to instigate more problems...The proper term for that is Guan Teen กวนตีน

Jai yen yen ใจเย็นๆ is about keeping calm and humble when situations arise that we have no control over, not those who feed off of mocking and downsizing others...

since your so keen to suggest that I'm using your mother tongue wrong (Your mom is a native English speaker isn't she?) by not conforming to proper spelling techniques bla bla bla

than I'll take the liberty of telling you that you're using my mother tongue wrong ! Either change your name, represent your current name correctly, or get of my ass

biyatch!

Where do they do that then, the same place perform the labotomy and graft on the fat ass?

Check the decimal place on those IQ results. :o

You have trouble understanding other people in 'lower social circles' that don't share your common outlook on life. <Nah .... Dad's a PhD educator ... Mom quit working when he got his PhD :D I managed my own way through school with Scholarships and working more than one job ... that includes the MA... it even includes some time in Thailand!! :D fortunately I learned how to use a condom at a young age!>or

:D Your parents were "Uni drop outs working without a degreee when they raised you, and you resent them for that because your life is miserable. And so now you resent anybody else who is born / breeds in that situation. <See A)><< and note that is TWICE you brought up my parents! Tacky tacky!

<Nope ... I don't work here :D just live here :D But who knows ... I will work here within a year I guess! So back to see A)>

or

D) You're a troll

<see A)> :D

Or just back to see a)

So which one is it JD?? :o

C'mon .... You brought the topic up .... same as budgets <for food> in Thailand ... same as football being something that victimizes Thais :D As far as your "unbeneficial semesters in a Uni ... I would think that the ability to GET a work-permit alone would be worth finishing a degree so that you could adequately take care of your family! You obviously resent those around you that aren't scraping by but we all make some bad choices when we are young, you still have the time to correct yours! After all I didn't get the Masters until I was in my mid-late 30's! I hope that you make a few wiser choices SOON! It may make a HUGE difference in raising a family!

IQ does have something to do with "success " but not a helluva lot to do with happiness ... same as degrees and houses and cars etc .... You aren't far behind where I started out .. on a path that allowed me to actually be here and relax and do things I really want to do! But chances are unless you finish school ... make some wise investments for you and your families future you won't get there! It would be a real shame if in 5 more years you were here still worried about people spending 20k baht a month on food ... or watching imported sports!

One last aside ... were you telling JYY that you are Thai and hence Thai is your mother tongue? Or were you telling him you are an American native English speaker? <and what is sologically?> Mother tongue usually refers to the language of the country of birth ___Definition: the language that a person acquires in earliest childhood; also, the primary language of a community; also called primary language, mother tongue.

Hope it works out for you here!

credit to him for putting himself on the line in so many ways.
