Then the elections will happen, but not before the reforms.

If the caretaker government is ousted and the "peoples council" installed, there will be no elections in Feb. Count on it.

I agree totally that the ENTIRE system, including the courts and police, MUST be reformed, but the elephant in the room is... by whom?

And said reformation MUST preceed any future election. It's sort of a catch 22.

Suthep has declared so many pledges over the past weeks ... nothing unusual for a politician.

Indeed he said he will retire from politics and turn himself in to the cops to face outstanding charges - as soon as he "wins" the battle.

However, my money is on this - if he wins the war, he won't step down in a hurry. He'll "reluctantly" postpone his retirement and court appearance until he serves as the next Prime Minister - due to the overwhelming desire of "his" people. Again, not a surprise for a Thai politician.

I admire him and he has some excellent insights on Thai politics.The trouble is there is an awful lot of dross in there with the gems, and he is sometimes wildly wrong.Furthermore if a journalist has excellent sources and inside information, it's really not necessary for him/her to keep on referring to it.Still despite my reservations, Crispin is compulsory reading and is interesting and illuminating even when wrong.

Not really. His chatter about 'purple people' was aimed at Gen Prem specificially and shouldn't really be taken as a homophobic slur. One of Thaksin's team, Jakrapob, someone who Thaksin apparently values highly, is gay and has been singled out for far worse slurs than that by ASTV, Manager and the lot. So it's not particular to one side.

On a social & cultural basis, it's far more likely that working class red shirts from Issan and the North would be accepting of homosexuality than many of the Chinese-Thai middle class that support the anti-govt movement. In my experience of the LGTB Thais I've met, the ones that have had trouble coming out and being accepted are far more likely from middle class backgrounds with Chinese-Thai parents than they are to be from a working class background.

Rak Chiang Mai 51 might justifiably have the reputation of being anti-gay throwbacks, but let's not forget that one of Thailand's prominent gay activists, Natee Teerarojjanapongs, shared their position on protecting 'Lanna culture' and blocking the gay rights parade there.

I don't think it really works to seperate red/yellow shirts on a liberal vs conservative basis. Many anti-govt people I know would class themselves as 'liberals' and many reds might fall under the conservative banner. And vice versa. I would say the anti-govt crowd have a more nationalist reputation, but particularly on sexuality I doubt there's any significant difference in stance.

I did not notice them concentrating all the power in one hands and ruining the country in the process, PTP did that altho they were elected by majority.
