2-3 million people expected at mass rallies against PM on Sunday: PDRC
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Dec 21 -- A spokesman from the anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) said the group expected some 2-3 million would turn up on Sunday to join the PDRC's rallies at many locations in Bangkok to pressure caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to resign.

Akanat Promphan, the spokesman, said activities would start at 1 pm and expected some 2-3 million people would join the mass demonstrations.

He said there would be supporters travelling from the provinces to attend the rallies- those from western regions would join the group at the Democracy Monument on Rajdamnoen Avenue while the eastern region would join the group at Asoke Road.

Supporters from the 12 northeastern provinces would join the group at Victory Monument while the group of rice farmers led by Thai Rice Farmers Association president Prasit Boonchoey would also join the demonstrations, the former Democrat Bangkok MP said.

Mr Akanat said the PDRC would prepare five separate main rally venues while 10 smaller stages were to be set up around Bangkok.

The main protest venues would be at Victory Monument, Siam, Asoke, Lumphini and Ratchaprasong. The smaller venues would be at Urupong, Ratchathewi, Pratunam, Charoenphon, Ploenchit, Hua Lampong, Sam Yan, Bang Rak, Khlong Toei and Thong Lor.

Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban, PDRC secretary general, would travel to all the stages but would mainly stay at Democracy Monument, he said.

Mr Akanat said that the demonstration may prolong until Monday morning.

He added that on Sunday morning at 9am, a group of females would protest at the caretaker premier home to demand her resignation.

The PDRC has called for mass rallies on Sunday to demand the caretaker premier resign and open the way for a "good person" to be selected as the country's new prime minister while an unelected People's Council would be set up for national reform. (MCOT online news)
