PHNOM PENH, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- Minister of Public Works and Transport Tram Iv Tek said Cambodia is looking into developing an expressway network to meet demands of a growing economy, Xinhua news agency reported.

"An expressway network is one of the vital infrastructures for the modern industry or economy, and is essential for future economic development," Tram said at an expressway development workshop on Wednesday.

The minister said many Asian countries, including neighbouring Vietnam and Thailand, have formulated expressway network plans and developed modern highways.

"Cambodia has been enjoying an economic growth and moving ahead towards the ASEAN Community. This means it is a good time for Cambodia to start developing an expressway network," Tram said.

According to the master plan, Cambodia could spend up to US$25.5 billion to build 2,230 km of expressways to connect provincial administrative regions, special economic zones, key transport centres, tourism attractions, border crossings and national defense strategic areas.
