Chiang Mai protest reports

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any hard information on things going on in Chiang Mai in regard to the political protests and rebuttals? Heard second hand reports that quite a few red shirts are gathered at Three Kings Monument and a rumor is going around that they want to close HWY-107 for some reason. We have a doctor's appointment tomorrow so wonder what we might be facing in the city.

PM me for tin foil hat sales and emergency instructions on how to cope!

Actually, 3,500 UK retiree expats seems remarkably low, presumably they refer to the small percentage who admit to living here vs the the much larger percentage who are registered as living at a relatives UK address!

Maybe in another 100 years the word 'ballot box' and what it stands for will be understood.

Maybe in another 100 years it will be understood that democracy becomes a farce when demagogues manipulate it for their own ends.

We need good leaders - not meaningless abstractions like 'the people' or 'the ballot box'.

If you read Thomas Paine and other founders of the modern democratic ideals you will note that what is needed is a strong and educated middle class as well as a a taxation system (progressive taxation and estate taxes) that prevents the arise of an elite class that will dominate political power. Democracy is no more alive in Thailand than it is in the US or the UK. Thatcher and Reagan eviscerated democracy in those two countries. Thailand has yet to see real democracy. Only fools think that Suthep represents democracy anymore than does Thaksin.

soldiers outside the boxing ring little bit of loh kroh rd closed

I believe that was for a temple event going on in that area. Nothing to do with the political situation. Things are rather quiet and subdued in Chiang Mai from what I can see.

Chiang Mai doesn't do civil and/or political unrest, it disrupts a normal pleasant lifestyle.
