Democrat leader condemns attacks, intimidation against protesters
By Digital Content

BANGKOK, Jan 15 – Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said today that a series of attacks and intimidation against anti-government people including himself will not stop people’s determination for national reform.

He was referring to a bomb explosion at his Sukhumvit residence and a firing into protesters near Pathum Wan rally site late last night.

A security guard and a few protesters who stayed overnight in front of the Asia Hotel near Pathumwan intersection were injured but there was no injury at Mr Abhisit’s residence.

The bombing at his house followed similar incidents at the residences of Democrat members including former prime minister Chuan Leekpai and former Democrat MP Satit Wongnongtoey in Trang, and Issara Somchai’s residence in Ubon Ratchthani.

Mr Abhisit said he believed the attacks were politically motivated, adding that he had earlier told Democrats to be on alert for possible attacks and violence.

“The arrested, armed suspects denied involvement in the attack at my house but police should interrogate them on their purpose of possessing weapons. It is noticeable that violence has not harmed people in the government bloc,” he said.

He called on police to protect people in light of last night’s attacks.

Regarding today’s forum initiated by the government to discuss the Feb 2 election, Mr Abhisit said whether the election would be postponed or not should be up to a bilateral discussion between the prime minister and the Election Commission.

“The government stood firm that the election was necessary as imposed by the law. However, the EC has warned that the Feb 2 poll will be against the objectives of the Constitution. The prime minister will intentionally breach the Constitution if she moves on with the election – an offence for which she is accountable,” said the former prime minister. (MCOT online news)

Order banning health officials to take leave scrapped

charnvit-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- An order issued by public heath deputy permanent secretary Dr Charnvit Tarathep forbidding all health officials to take business leave and to travel to upcountry provinces during January 13-25 has been revoked because it is illegal.

The order issued on January 11 ahead of the January 13 Bangkok Shutdown campaign was intended to prevent health officials from joining the anti-government protests.

Dr Bancha Khamkhong, director of the Central Administration Office of Public Health Ministry, said Wednesday that the order was not issued by the person in charge of personnel administration in the Central Administration Office but by someone else in the Policy and Strategic Affairs Office. Also, he noted that Public Health Permanent Secretary Dr Narong Sahamethapat was still in the office the day when the order was issued and he had not delegated his authority to anyone else.

The embattled permanent secretary who is facing a disciplinary probe for supporting the protests held a VDO conference on Wednesday with provincial health chiefs across the country during which he explained to them the authority of the three deputy permanent secretaries so that there won’t be any confusion.

He urged the provincial health chiefs to unite and to serve the public to their best.

Second rice crops in Suphan Buri are dying due to water shortage

rice-field-wpcf_728x413.jpg

Farmers in three districts of Suphan Buri province have asked for emergency help to save over 30,000 rai of their second crops from total damage due to acute shortage of water to irrigate their farmland.

Mr Wichien Pantodee who is in charge of the management of water in Klong Makham Thao-U Thong canal disclosed Wednesday that rice plants in the fields in U Thong, Don Chedi and Muang districts were withering and would soon die if water has not arrived fast enough through the irrigation canal.

He said that water that was discharged from Klong Makham Thao-U Thong canal was not enough to irrigate the rice fields and the period of water flow was too short.

On top of that, he said that the money needed to operate the water pumps was drying up and fresh funding already requested from the provincial agricultural office is yet to arrive.

Without water or if the water arrives too late, all the rice crops in 30,000 rai of rice fields in the three districts will be wiped out and the farmers will be in deep trouble and their accumulated debt problem will worsen, warned Mr Wichien.

EC is short of 140,000 election officials for 15 southern provinces

214994-imagejpeg-328961-1-wpcf_728x413.j

BANGKOK: -- With the election barely three weeks away, the Election Commission is still unable to recruit some 140,000 election officials needed to supervise elections in 15 southern provinces, EC’s secretary-general Puchong Nutrawong admitted Wednesday.

To address this particular problem, he said chairman of the Election Commission had invoked Article 20 of the Election Commission Act to order governmental agencies to help out by sending their officials to serve as election officials.

The EC is also facing another problem about finding the venues for advance voting which is due to take place on January 26, said Mr Puchong, adding that the EC had sought help from governmental units in the southern provinces to set aside venues to be used as the central election centres.

Regarding the election in Bangkok where there will be some 6,000 polling units where election officials are needed, the EC secretary-general admitted that help had been sought with the City Administration, the Education Ministry and the armed forces to spare their officials to help out.

Democrat party to boycott all government’s activities unless ….

Democrat_Party_logo1-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The Democrat party will not join any efforts by the government to work out a solution to the political conflict unless the perpetrators who threw a bomb into the house of party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva are arrested, said Democrat party spokesman Chavanont Intharakomalasut Wednesday.

He accused the caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra of being pretentious and insincere by “sporting smiles during the day time and, at night, sending out stooges to harass the Democrats and not even Abhisit was spared ”.

The Democrat spokesman described the meeting of all parties concerned which was initiated by the government on Wednesday to gauge opinions about whether the February 2 should be delayed or not as just a pretext to justify its objective to press ahead with the election.

The Democrat party as well as the People’s Democratic Reform Committee and the Election Commission have boycotted the meeting.

Had the Democrats and the PDRC joined the meeting they would have been grouped as the minority and the government would have used the majority of the participants to justify the claim that the majority of the people want the election to go ahead.
