Koh Samui to Mu Koh Surin on PCX. (Best route).

Didn't really know which forum to put this in, but seeing as Samui will be my starting point i have posted here.

Looking drive across the peninsular to visit Mu Koh Surin on my PCX in Feb. When plotting route on my GPS for a motorbike, it shows going via 41 to Chumpon, then across on 4006, through Khoum Mae Yai Mon Wildlife Reserve, and down to Kuraburi. (Showing 289 miles, 11hrs 16 mins) and this is programmed to show the fastest route.blink.png Something wrong there.

To me, the 401, and 4246 through Khao Sok is shorter, 234 miles, but seems to be showing part of the route as private road. (Is this going through part of the National Park which may be controlled?

For anyone who might have done either of these, which is the better route? Or which route would you take?

I am just wondering if the GPS is picking what seems to be the longer route to avoid something, maybe those crazy bus drivers.

Apple Maps shows 170 miles 3hr 56 min

I and a few others are pretty much planning on this same area in March...from Samui on PCX and Honda 125i ... too! ... (some southern members from the photo forum meeting up and going to ride around.... plus a couple from over seas) ...

In my mind at the moment the plan is to go via Khao Sok, (did that last year ) ... it's an easy drive... except for Surat city there is not much traffic and road good. Perhaps spend a night in KS , (lots of choices to stay there) and then head on west and then north up to Phang Nga. and Ranong and then back probably via Chumpon...

I am waiting on some others who have just been to Koh Phayam, to send some pictures... reports are it's nice over that side!....thumbsup.gif

PM me if you wish, perhaps get together and discuss, if you are on Samui now~ !

From Donsak via 401 all the way to the West coast [suratthani,/ Khao Sok / Khao Lak]. It's a beautiful ride on a bike.

A bit boring from Donsak to Suratthani but once you have passed Suratthani it's nice.
Khao Sok through the forest is great.

No need for a GPS - it's 401 all the way.

Only done it in my truck (both routes), but Khao Sok is much prettier, I would do that twice and use the time saved to spend more time in the prettiest area (the park). Other route is also nice if you crave variety.

Watch the bit across the 4006, it's bloody freezing if you hit it in the mid morning. (I rode it last week)

Just to add, I went to Ranong (290km) and it took just over 5 hours from Donsak.

A private taxi is probably a lot safer, depending on the driver of course.

I just knew some one would say that... bah.gif ...

It's a very nice drive with out having a taxi driver speeding you to the final destination ....

One can stop and detour around different areas en route.... the roads in the south have virtually no traffic and most if not all have bike lanes...facepalm.gif

Whether this route or even going down to Hat Yai and the border, etc... from Donsak...

All being done on a PCX?

That's amazing!

What's the average speed your traveling on the bike?

Not sure what's amazing about that, ? .. it's a good riding bike.... generally I drive around 80 -85 kms/ hour... on the mainland, can do faster, but find that a comfortable speed for me!...

My first long trip was to drive all around Malaysia, that was before modified the 125 cc PCX, now equivalent to 150 cc... thumbsup.gif Not some thing to try with the old 110 Click, but I think the new 125i cc Honda Click would be fine too, IMO...

It's good to get rid of the seat hump, which is cheap and easy to do, on the PCX ...

For nature lovers, between now, January to April, it is worth while to seek out Surrathannii's Provincial flower, the Raffleasia, which can be found in the Khoa Sok area... One needs to ask the local tour guides! It can be a good hike up a mountain...facepalm.gif ....

Some foam shops will recover it...It should be only 300 or 400 baht... they replace the foam and sculpt it, and recover the seat! (hard foam not soft...) the shop below knows how to do! thumbsup.gif

One might want to be there to make sure the fit is right, before they recover!!

IMG_2322.JPG

On Samui, the one shop I know, who does it, is in Maenam, about a kilometer west (toward) Nathon on the right... just before Maenam Resort road. Lots of foam and chairs outside! No name shop!

What you do with the screws and hump is up to you! biggrin.png ... I am not sure if filling the holes with some kind of sealant would work... a tube of sealant is almost a much anyway! wink.png

Getting back to subject or original question , I was looking at Google maps this morning, it is closer via Khoa Sok, to Ranong, than via Chumpon, from Samui, but when I and the group of use do it, we'll make it a loop trip... Probably a 1400 -1500 kilometer trip, depending on side road trips!

Make sure to have air filter checked before starting off, having a clean filter can really help gas mileage... I generally get 200 + kms per 200 baht tankful ... but that depends on speed! whistling.gif

I also have a Shad box on back, that's great as it saves your back... not having a backpack! (see sponsor on the Motorbike thread in this forum...)

Hope not too much information! tongue.pngbiggrin.png

Opps! facepalm.gif

To late to make a correction to my mileage estimate... probably more like 800 to 900 kms .... whistling.gif round trip... (depending on side trips!)
