Thai girls ranked Asia's top for unplanned pregnancies

In a country where young people are told to abstain from intercourse instead of being educated about using protection, there can be no other result.

Abstain from intercourse instead of being educated !!! 9 to 12 year old kids. You must be stark raving mad. Much of the fault lies within the culture itself exacerbated by the deliquent parenting and lack of responsibility and accountability. Furthermore what kind of scumbag has intercourse with a child.

No surprise at all on this article. So many young 16/17 years old running around with big bellies and no man who will claim responsibility.

Man? I think you mean boy.

Why? You think men don't impregnate young girls too? However, I believe Red Snake meant no one to accept responsibility.

It also doesn't help when families are "pimping" out their underaged girls, or outright "selling" them. I used to take bike trips around Northern & Central Thailand before my stroke. On one trip I stopped at a small village off the main highway going to KK from CNX. Pulled into a small family run restaurant. Husband spoke a little English, he son spoke more. Long story short, he offered to sell his 12yr old daughter to me, claiming she was virgin. 50k and I could put her on the bike and take her home. I left without finishing my meal before I beat him to a pulp, which would have been easy.

In another case, a woman selling flowers at one of the intersections of the Outer Ring Road tried to pimp her 13 yr old daughter to me for 1,500 baht for an hour, or 3,000 baht for all night, and even told me where a nearby short time hotel was that I could take her to.

Those are the two that stick out in my mind, but I've seen countless examples of similar things in the 7 years I've been here. The parents have no shame, and the poor kids have no say-so in the matter.

I wonder why they chose you to sell their daughters to???!!

I agree that poor upcountry farmers and laborers have children for the sole purpose of generating income so they can retire early and have an easy life. Rather than working hard, they slack off earlier in life - drinking, having affairs, screwing as many young women as possible, buying the latest most expensive mobile phones, cars, other unnecessary luxury items.

Their daughters are a source of income. Most of them know that their daughters are prostitutes, but turn a blind eye because their greed is a much bigger motivator than being a responsible parent. In fact, being a responsible parent means making sure their daughters cough up 5-7,000 baht each from their Bangkok jobs and give it to them [like extortion]... strange how these parents can barely scrape by with 4,000 baht a month, suddenly expect their daughters to earn and give them even more!

Of course they know their daughters are prostitutes. They simply don't give a shit and only care about what they have. Greedy, selfish and irresponsible.

So that is why there are so many unwanted pregnancies... pregnancies from young women who come to Bangkok, having sex for money and doing it in an unprotected fashion... and greedy, filthy married farmer fathers preying on innocent upcountry girls for sex outside their marriage and not caring at all whether these girls are pregnant or not... the only thing they care about is getting their c*cks wet!!!! The younger the better is their motto!

The parents and grandparents and extended family members care for the babies. That's how it is in Thailand.

Contraception is not really a concern or priority yet, neither is sex education. Thai people generally just let nature take its course, and everybody loves babies and small children.

Where I come from these children would have to bear the stigma of being bastards. That concept is a foreign one in Thailand.

Not only in Thailand but in other parts of Asia, Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia where the countries are still primarily agrarian. On the farm, children are the parents. source of labor and in the parent's old age, the income from the children are the parents' social security. There is really no concept of male responsibility for his offspring in this situation. It is the woman's responsibility -- not that I agree with this.

As societies change, so will the attitudes about unprotected sex and how women perceive their role in society. For Thailand, I hope this happens sooner than later. Young women need more of a chance for an education and a profession. My oldest daughter became pregnant when she was 15 -- I know the pitfalls all too well.

This can't be true.

I seriously doubt it was just me they were offering their daughters to. They guy in the village saw what he considered a "rich farang" on what he considered an "expensive big bike", and saw baht signs in his eyes. As for the flower seller, I know a couple of other guys she made the same offer to. Otherwise, how did she know about the short time hotel not far from her corner? I've talked to a few other guys like me who love to do the trips, and they've encountered the same thing once they get off the main roads and into some of the smaller villages.

Parenting. I can't see the idea of telling my daughter "shag around safely, here is a rubber" etc. as posters have suggested- that teaches no responsibility.

Thats part of the problem. Its parenting and teaching consequences. The old man told me I have two hands. If I was to get a girl pregnant, I'd be out of the house on my own. A sense of fear of consequences and of responsibility goes a long way. It starts at home.

Just handing kids a rubber doesn't teach them much. The education system here and parenting are to blame. No parenting, then they'll learn on their own, the internet, whatever. Showing them the lives of kids who messed up their lives and the hardship it resulted in upon their young ones..that sends shock waves. I remember the videos of kids having kids in junior high, living in economic disparity, hungry kids. Society has less values nowadays indeed, and thats not a religious comment, just an observation. Not to mention its true the foods we eat nowadays have resulted in girls becoming a woman younger and younger. All that starts at home and in school. Here, those two subjects of education and parenting are problem areas indeed.

this is so correct .... and this valentines day they are being told to "go to the wats" ....

Of course this is after commercializing Valentines Day in Thailand and making every single person believe if they don't have a partner on that day they are losers

Lack of planning is their forte.

You hit the nail on that one!

9 year olds getting pregnant? 12 year olds pregnant with their second child? Come on! Really? You find that easy to believe?

If a 9 year old got pregnant it would probably make front page news. Only a handful of cases have ever been recorded

14/15 year olds ok. That's another matter.

Whilst I feel the same reaction as you is it possible the mindset is simply different?

Is it possible these parents simply look at sex in a different way to us from the west?

....that it's not such a big deal and perhaps in their minds comes as a far more favourable option than their daughters or them working in the fields under the hot sun?

Again, I'm not promoting just suggesting

ps 11 and 12 year olds queuing up for their second childbirhts.......no, maybe happened once?....need decent figures

Spend some time away from BKK, and into the smaller towns, cities, villages of Thailand, and YOU will believe.

And yet another hub status Thailand could achieve effortlessly. Congratulations, you're really making big strides in becoming a record holder in many, many disciplines... except those that really count for something in the eyes of the world:

-- educational excellence? Zip

-- human rights? Zilch

-- honesty and transparency? Nada

-- morals and ethics? Nyet

-- respect for law and order? Dream on

-- protection of the young and elderly? Pfft

-- advances and innovation in science, medicine and technology? Bummer

-- environmental protection? What's that

-- anti-corruption drives? Ha ha ha ha

-- press freedom? Only on paper (pun intended)

-- and so on, and so on...

You know you should not believe everything you read about Thai society from this forum.

It is believed that up to 40% of the pregnancies in Canada were unplanned. Two thirds in women under the age of 20. Under age pregnancies are on the increase as well. This is not just a Thai issue but a global issue that needs to be addressed.

Yes, it's true.

Of course these are planned. It's stemming from a super double-secret society located in the jungles, never seen by a farang. Their plan is to populate the world with 6 billion thais and become more powerful than all other countries combined. At the current rate, it will only take another 104,876 years.

When the 15 year olds are 25, and they have two children ages 10 and 12(!), they'll be online looking for "farangs" to marry.

All this disbelief in the data! I think this is just bad English (again and again!!). The 30% refers to the previous sentence, which states that many newborns are being left in hospital care. It does not say that 30% of ALL grade 8/9 girls are pregnant.

From what I've seen, many unwanted babies are given to someone in the extended family to look after them. This happens in other cultures, not just Thailand. So the number of unwanted babies is far higher than reported and the article is really about abandoned babies - different.

I hate to say this, this is not just a Thai phenomenon, this is Asian. In many parts of Asia, and under many circumstances, the daughter(s) are considered property that can be "bought" and "sold". Sometimes it's unabashed in-your-face, sometimes it's more subtle.

pumped and dumped by irresponsible youths

Takes 2 to tango

Agree entirely if they are adults but a nine year old can hardly make an informed choice can they.

Well the Thai boys like to get them on the way to school as it is to late on the way home, mostly the act will already have been performed

A big factor is the Thais are like the Catholics of Buddhism and this is one of the results of that on top of other scandals.

Thanks for that superfluous tautology.... Catholics of Buddha????? cannot make heads or tails out of that.

This topic may be the right place to talk about my experience. I am married here and not with young children, but I know that many foreigners are around its own young kids, or from his spouses former marriage.

My wife have only married siblings, but her sisters have kids from 8 to 14 years old. The family is religious and fairly conservative. We meet them very often over the month, and I like very much by around the kids. All them are taking and using their ipods and tablets everywhere and in very occasion, something that bothers me sometimes, but is very common now. Even at the temples.

A while ago the sister with a 14 years old son commented that her son was unable to use his notebook because some technical problems.

I know some about computers and his mother asked for me to take a look, and also noticed that her son was not very happy with the idea. His mother insisted.

The computer was running too slow and I got their permission to take it to our home. If I cannot fix it, I know somebody very good in that.

By past experience, I know that kids like to load a lot of music, videos, pictures, and heavy games programs, without doing the proper cleaning. In some cases it is necessary to reformat the machine or change Windows. That's all.

I use a program from Google called Picasa to manage those kind of files. Picasa copy EVERY graphic file on the machine on a single file. Sometimes computers archive graphics even from online advertisement and books. With Picasa it is easy to deleted. This notebook didn't had that program.

When I installed Picasa, by my surprise, took a very long time to copy all those files. Finally, I got all together to manage it.

Well....The notebook was loaded with hundred of pornographic pictures and movies. I didn't count, at least 300....and... I have to admit..I looked in some...and was shocked by the content...

Was hard to believe for me that kind of material is available for FREE, and to ANYBODY. I am talking about very heavy stuff I cannot comment here, but I know that in the US is a crime just to watch. Most of the material was from Asian countries porno web sites, including Thailand's.

I told my wife about, and she decided to tell her sister, and to get her authorization to delete everything of that nature from the notebook. After that operation, cleaning, desfragmenting, etc, etc, the machine was working well again.

I do not know what happened later.....No comments from the family or my wife....but the kid is not so friendly with me anymore....and I do not know if he was sharing his "collection" with his younger sisters.or friends....All them still using their Ipods.......

I hope somebody is talking with them about all that, and give some guidance, because rape, perversion, torture, sodomy, incest, child abuse, etc, etc, etc...do not have nothing to do with sex education...

Ah sir! The NGO is called the "Thai Government". Please have a "bex" and a good lie down! giggle.giffacepalm.gif
