Farmers put up 'for sale' sign at MOC to mock delay in paying rice growers

BANGKOK, 15 February 2014 (NNT) – Protesting rice growers who have been camping in front of the Ministry of Commerce have put up a sign saying the ministry is up for sale, at the price of 120 billion baht—the amount owed to the farmers by the government.

The farmers have been protesting the late payment of money owed to them, by camping in front of the Ministry of Commerce since Monday. On Friday they put up the 'for sale' sign, in a sarcastic effort to get the 120 billion baht required to pay all the farmers under the rice pledging scheme. The protesting rice growers also distributed rice plants to those who donated to the group on the occasion of Valentine's Day.

Some of the farmers were reported to have left the camp site to return home for rest, before coming back to Bangkok on Monday for a scale-up of the demonstration, which allegedly will involve a march to the Defense Ministry Permanent Secretary's Office, where the prime minister was temporarily working from.

In the meantime, the political situation has caused concern among rice growers in Chachoengsao, who are still waiting for the payment from the rice mortgage program. Although the government has already declared it will start paying next week, the farmers are worried that they will be planting the current rice crop at a loss should the mortgage program be cancelled for the next harvest season.

Thai couples try to break world record for longest hug

PATTAYA, 15 February 2014 (NNT) – Twenty-six couples gathered in Pattaya in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest hug.

On Valentine’s Day, 26 couples set a new record for the world’s longest hug as they wrapped their arms around each other for 26 hours, 26 minutes and 26 seconds, breaking the previous record set by an English couple.

According to the organizer, the video will sent to the Guinness World Record officials for the confirmation of the record.

Apart from the hugging marathon, a lucky draw was also held to find a winner who would walk away with a pair of diamond rings worth around 50,000 baht. The winner was a 29-year-old man.

The rules dictated that all contestants must hug their partners continuously and both arms must be wrapped around each other at all times. If the hug weakens or the arms drop, the couple would then be disqualified. Each couple must remain awake at all times and can only take a five-minute break each hour, in accordance with the Guinness World Record rules.

PDRC co-leader Sonthiyarn freed on bail

2-13-2014-9-32-38-PM.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The Criminal Court this afternoon granted temporary release on bail for the co-leader of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) with condition that he must not engage in activities that could create disturbances and disorders in the country.

The decision of the Criminal Court came after the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) sought a 12-day extended detention of the co-leader Sonthiyarn Chuenruthainaitham on insurrection charge, reasoning that it needed the extension because there are still 120 witnesses to be questioned to gather evidence for the charge.

The court accepted the DSI’s request for extended detention, but at the same time also granted temporary release on bail of 400,000 baht for Sonthiyarn.

But the court set as condition for temporary release that the suspect must not take part in any activity that could create disturbances and disorders in the country.
