Hounded premier adapts to work on the run

A file photo of caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and former Pheu Thai MP Jirayu Huangsap ploughing during the 2011 election campaign.

BANGKOK: -- Since the anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) emerged four months ago, caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has been forced to seek alternative lodgings and offices, and has had to drastically change her work routine.

On some nights Yingluck does not return to her residence, and seeks overnight accommodation elsewhere.

Yesterday, she also reportedly cancelled her scheduled work at the Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO) headquarters and reportedly sought refuge in a "safe house".

However, a source close to Yingluck said PM's secretary-general Suranand Vejjajiva was organising trips for Yingluck to oversee drought problems in the North and Northeast soon.

Yingluck's "safe houses" include a condominium unit in Pattaya, the Samphran Police Cadet Academy and a guest house inside the Air Force base in Don Muang district of Bangkok.

Yingluck appears to be deliberately varying her routine to avoid falling into a pattern in terms of where she works and sleeps.

It is not safe for her to work at Government House, as protesters have surrounded the area and could try to confront her at very short notice, thus putting her security at risk.

Safety measures have also been adjusted: Gone is the highly visible motorcade befitting a prime minister, in order to attract as little attention as possible.

As for her alternative offices, in the early days of the PDRC's campaign, Yingluck chose the National Police Headquarters near the Ratchaprasong intersection, which eventually proved to be too close to protesters. By the end of last year, she spent most of her time touring the North and the Northeast instead. Even then, there were instances of unpleasant encounters with whistle-blowing protesters.

When the PDRC stepped up its attempts to "chase" the premier after the New Year, Yingluck switched her temporary offices to three sites: the conference room of the Air Force base, the Army Club, and - most frequently - the Office of the Permanent Secretary of the Defence Ministry.

When she first arrived at the Office of the Permanent Secretary, some officials were caught off guard.

PDRC leader Suthep Thaugsuban recently led protesters to this office and told officials that they would surround the place if Yingluck returned, so it is unclear if she will be seeking another temporary office, such as in her home province of Chiang Mai, as offered by some red shirts.

Cases, petitions against PM

- The alleged improper transfer of former permanent Defence secretary General Sathien Permthong-in;

- Allowing her fugitive brother Thaksin to appear on state-controlled NBT TV channel to speak prior to a Thai boxing match in Macau;

- Allowing Thaksin to hold a Thai passport;

- Alleged mishandling of the 2011 flood crisis;

- Alleged mishandling of the rice-pledging scheme and opening the door to corruption;

- Petition with the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) for the possible mishandling of proposed water-management projects;

- Possible corruption in relation to the proposed Bt2-trillion infrastructure projects. The NACC is in the process of collecting evidence.

"protesters have surrounded the area and could try to confront her at very short notice"

Thus leading to the asking of questions, which would cause major embarrassment due to lack of a knowledge !!!!

I can't understand what Madam Caretaker P.M. is running from , all these poor people want, is to have a talk , as the members of Parliament are actually employee's of the public purse, they are employed by the people , so if your employer wants to ask some questions , the PM and the Administration should fully co-operate. That's Democracycoffee1.gif

Actually the "scarf" around her waist, as you probably already know, is a 'pakama' ผ้าขาวม้า a versatile piece of cloth worn in many parts of Thailand, particularly the N.E.

They come from Chez Roi Et fashion house and are useful for more than just around the waist.whistling.gif

Yingluck looks particularly lovely with her version. A must have for any wannabee farmer types.

Such a carefree photo, she looks 10 years younger two years ago. I bet if she realised then what big brother had in store for her she would still be a CEO without a worry in the world. Life's a bitch.

The thing is that modern politics is certainly performance-art, marionette shows etc. and that makes many of the politicians forget that their catwalk performances in the political sphere, while sadly subverted to this drama-school kind of affair these days, still has direct and terrible implications for the people down below. It is easy to sign your name on some papers and tell yourself its okay, then smile at the cameras and reassure people, its just performance art at that stage, but then when the paper you signed leads to debt-suicides etc. or in the case of the dune-loon leads to mass-executions of thousands of innocent unarmed civilians, it is no longer performance art and is a crime against humanity.

The papers Yingluck signed did lead directly to massive emotional trauma and debt-suicides in some of the most upstanding and hardworking families in the nation. All the gold frills and glitter in the world can't change the fact that this type of negligence and corruption is a crime against humanity.

Organising trips to the North and North East? So instead of solving the problems in the other parts of the country, she is going to her strongholds. This will only create further division... those who feel cheated will now feel ignored, and those who love her will do so all the more.

A selfish act by people desperate to hang on to power, no matter what the cost.

Sooo!! Here is the big question. If the secretary genereral is making plans for YL to go north, is it really to oversee a drought problem? Or is that an excuse to flee where she is protected? One has to ask this since almost all projects she has been in charge of never saw her in their meetings as overseer.

...the purpose and relevance of the photo being......???

And if she's not careful she will add to current claims / investigations that the speeches / actions are actually electioneering.

Also, she's got a water 'expert', mr. plodprasop, who a few months back was opening his mouth and severely putting his foot in his mouth at every turn, now he's never seen.

He's the minister in charge of water matters, why is he not on the job and taking care of this matter. In reality what does yingluck know about serious large scale water management?

On the other hand if she's seen in some rural areas there is surely the possibility that she's be booed or even worse.

Pannic setting in with the Coup mongers and we can see this from Legal and media efforts this week.

"What doesn't Kill us, makes us stronger" PM has really dug in now and has the voters rights to defend..... She could come out of this very well!

Meanwhile, propaganda hit fever pitch today and as every item is anti Gov, there is no more they can do. This is the peak of the propaganda now and it is clearly falling short of swaying anybody other than the faithful.

Which buffalo is she? The one sniffing the other ass, or the one whose having her ass sniffed?whistling.gif

I doubt she is guilty of any corruption. If mismanagement is a crime, then Abhisit and Suthep should have been charged as well for their mismanagement of Thailand a few years ago.

A pure military coup would be much better than what is happening now, where the courts, NACC are operating outside the law and acting biased. Had these institutions (and many more) done their done their job unbiased and with pride, skill honesty over the last decades, Thailand would have been a much better place. It is vital that these institutions are politically neutral, but it is blatantly obvious that they are political tools in the current power struggle. It's a shame.

She should move her office to Chiang Mai or better still, Dubai (save the cost of Skype).

Can you imagine that officials being caught of guard when the Minister of defense shows up at her office.

Well it will at least show her how strong a grip she has on them. If she see's how week it is with the former supporters in Bangkok trying to get money out of her she may reconsider her position.

On the other hand will she be allowed to reconsider it and if is she smart enough to see it needs different thinking and actions. Interesting that she can not work out of Chalerm's office as the heasd of the movement to keeep peace and disband the protestors.

Doe's any one think she has finally figured out what the rest of the nation has known for a long time. He is a waste of time. A major user of ear medicine.
