Well let's assume for the sake of argument you're Thai and not some washed-up western failure sitting there in his underwear with his pud in his hand getting his jollies by pretending to be a local rather than facing up to his own worthlessness.

It shoud be funny ( but it isn't it's rather sad) that you can vote, can own a business, and can own property but come from a country where the daily minimum wage that many people have to survive on would just about by a KFC family bucket in the west, the enforcement of laws for the benefit of all is somewhat "lacking", shall we say, if you've got the cash you're above the law and kid's are leaving university with bachelor degrees which, in many cases, would be more worthy being used as bog roll to enter a career with a salary less than I earned as a 16 year old apprentice 30 years ago. Not forgetting the 5 year old kids selling garlands at the traffic lights at midnight when they should be home in bed ready for school and hopefully a brighter future, Thais killing their fellow countrymen like it ain't no thing and the lack of a safety net for the poor wretches without a pot to piss in living their lives in desperation.

Really we're the ones who should be laughing at the way this country stumbles from one f-up to the next to the complete detriment of the poor buggers who aren't as fortunate as us.

The strategy is working. Thaksin company stocks have plummeted, a hotel has now received a very bad PR exposure and coughed up 120,000 baht, and other companies are being affected, as people ask for more information as to what these companies are, and whether they are propping them up unknowingly. Boycotts have often been a potent tool, and as this boycott has just got started, it is clearly having a promising start. Again, Suthep has come up with a populous response. The farmers are a very powerful populous response. The every day customers withdrawing their savings is a very populous response. And so is this boycott. It invites involvement from all Thai citizens. When the people themselves become an extension of a protest movement, then it becomes a very powerful thing indeed.

When you consider that many many expats out here are loser, drunken, whoring alcoholics, we really do get all the virtuous ones on here. People who deny the existence of God, all suddenly believing in karma, and how this monk is the worst thing in Thailand and he (and Vanessa Mae) are a disgrace, blah blah blah, it is bloody hilarious. Let me tell you karma is BS. I have been doing good on this planet all my adult life, raising huge amounts of money for humanitarian projects and seeing them through to their conclusion. The time and money I have spent in pursuit of the betterment of others is massive, and the ONLY reward is that! The physical betterment of the lives of others and the enjoyment of seeing that. Not ponce in all that time has 'karma' come back and done anything good for me or my family, it just keeps throwing more and more sh*t at me. The conclusion is, it doesn't exist and if it is in the next life, I won't know it or remember this life so I am not interested.

Som e of you get a life for Gods sake, there re a LOT of bad people out in Thailand, this monk is not one of them and Thaksin is.

Maybe we could change the name of this forum to meet the needs of some of its more sanctamonious members and go from Thai Visa to Thailand's Virtuous.

For a serious answer, personally, I do not consider he is suited to monastic life as I understand it, but what he does is his affair. I wholeheartedly disagree that his actions so far represent 'everything that is bad about Thailand embodied in one person', that is drama Queen claptrap. Many monks in Tibet and Myanmar have taken to being prolific campaigners for the rights of the oppressed, and some have even taken to arms. If we apply our interpretation of a 2000 year old code of conduct to modern day monks then the temples would be much less populated than they currently are. Smokers, drinkers, fornicators, materialistic laptop, mobile owning clergy. The fact is that as Buddhism is a personal journey of enlightenment then it has very little to do with anybody else. The action of every true monk is not to help other people, it is governed by doing what they believe is necessary to reach enlightenment. We are still demanding monks follow a 2000 year old code that says they 'cannot carry raw wool for more than 48 km', yet it doesn't say a monk should not have a smart phone. Perhaps if reincarnation is a given and will continue ad infinitum we need an update of the rules and regs rather than using those from 100 lifetimes ago.

I am just amazed there are not more monks involved. Everyone seems to be forgetting the large number of monks in the North that were involved in supporting the red protests in 2010, an inconvenient truth when you are on a rant don't you think.

This is after all nothing new and there is much more to get riled about when leaping on the outrage bus.

Apart from monks taking a very political stance in Myanmar, India & with the red shirts in 2010, there is even a political party of monks in Sri Lanka. Very pro-Buddhist and anti-Hindu.

They supported the government's appalling elimination of the Tamil Tigers together with hundreds of Tamil (i.e.Hindu) citizens.

I applaud the monk here in getting a modest Shin contribution to the PDRC cause.

The compensation was for the wasted diesel and other costs of getting to the hotel from up-country.

The police colonel who was called by the hotel even paid the 4,200 baht deposit from his own money, according to other reports!

Well, I had a look and basically they are a set of very very old rules are they not, and number 18 simply says they are not to say the money is theirs. What is your point? To put the value of the rules in to perspective, number 16 is... the monk must not "Carrying raw wool for more than 48 km."

And at the end of the day, all 30 rules are simply made such that if they are broken then the monk must confess it to another monk, once that is done then all is well. Clearly a set of rules that were nothing to do with Buddha, but the power hungry who came afterwards, trying to use religion to establish their own power base....seems to happen a lot in religion.
