Redshirts Test Court's Neutrality With A Rally At NACC

BANGKOK: -- The Redshirts have organised a symbolic protest at the anti-corruption agency to test the validity of a court ruling which barred the authorities from forcefully dispersing protesters.

At the rally in front of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) office in Nonthaburi province, the Redshirts demonstrators said they wanted to find out whether they are granted the same rights to peaceful assembly similar to the anti-government protesters.

The Civil Court ruled last week that the government cannot remove anti-government protesters from their rally sites nor impede their campaign to oust Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra by means of confiscating their items or sealing off roads around their protest sites.

According to the judges, the anti-government protesters led by the People′s Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD) were exercising their rights to free assembly in a non-violent manner, as protected by the 2007 Constitution.

The verdict effectively strips the government of special powers authorised by the emergency decree, which bans any political gathering, and is widely seen as a judicial endorsement of the anti-government protests.

To the pro-government Redshirts, the verdict is nothing less than another proof that the Thai courts are applying "double-standard" to the political crisis; in 2010, the court affirmed the State of Emergency imposed by then-Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva against the Redshirts protests in Bangkok.

In front of the NACC office today, the Redshirts demonstrators burned a mock coffin of NACC director and gave speeches denouncing the works of the NACC, especially its summon for Ms. Yingluck to hear corruption allegations against her on 27 February.

Some of the protesters also held up signs resembling a clock with its hands pointing at 12.00 (tiang trong) - the pun gesture was meant to question whether the Thai courts are fair (tiang trong) like the clock.

The Redshirts also chained the entrance gate to the NACC headquarters, mocking the action of PCAD demonstrators who had besieged various state agencies in the past weeks.

The protesters were led by Mr. Chawarit Suriya, a local member of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD).

4 companies of police officers and 1 company of soldiers were stationed inside the NACC office to maintain order, while all non-essential staff were instructed to leave the office as a precaution.

None of the NACC top directors were present at the office, our correspondent added.

They should be allowed to protest (peacefully) if they so wish...

... and it appears they are being allowed - even if burning a coffin as some symbolic threat against the NACC is somewhat distasteful.

Did they bring any children with them this time? Bottles of Petrol? Blood Donation equipment?

These protestors are just showing what morons they are. Is it not warm enough in Thailand, so they light a fire. Is it not light enough for them that they seek to light a fire. I hope they inhale the smoke and choke on it.

Why are the UDD so against the PM answering charges of corruption when she and her fellow ministers have treated the farmers so badly? Money intended to help the por has clearly gone missing and nobody would have a better idea where than the chairperson of the rice committee herself.

So the smart move to expose them is to burn things down in front of the NACC building?

Implement reforms? To ensure corruption flourishes? Or reforms to ensure all the principles of democracy are adhered to? Do you know the principles of democracy? Obviously not because if you did you would not suggest a smart move is to burn something down to make your point.

It will be interesting to see how far the UDD supporters take this. The old saying goes that violence is the language of the inarticulate. One need not look further than the aptly named "Beating of the war drum" meeting to realize that.

If I get a reply will it be "But the PDRC did…." or asking another question instead of addressing my uncomfortable truths? Or cherry picking, or any other technique used by supporters of regimes to divert actually addressing what I have said?

I hope that now the UDD supporters are in town the death toll does not rise. No more innocent lives need to be lost due to this senseless defense (attack) of one principle of democracy.

If I would believe to have been wrongfully accused of something, they wouldn't have to summon me to defend myself, I'd be knocking on their doors to be let in and prove my innocence.

Judging from the public reaction to the news emerging from Ukraine and Turkey today about corruption at the very top I imagine the PTP would like the lid kept firmly shut on this one.... at least until the getaway plane's engines are nicely warmed up.

Pro-govt protesters seize anti-graft office over rice probe

NONTHABURI, Feb 26 – Pro-government activists sealed off the office of National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) today and charged the independent agency with prejudice in its investigation on negligence of duty charges against the prime minister in relation to the rice pledging scheme.

The demonstrators, mainly from the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), charged the NACC with having a double standard for implicating caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in alleged corruption in the state’s rice subsidies since 2012.

The protesters handed over an open letter to Suchart Chimnoi, director of the NACC Information and Special Affairs Office, calling on the NACC to perform its duty with fairness and justice.

Ms Yingluck was summoned to acknowledge charges in the rice pledging programme in her capacity as chairperson of the National Rice Policy Committee at NACC headquarters tomorrow.

NACC member Vicha Mahakhun earlier said she could ask to postpone the schedule if engaged in an important obligation.

In case she fails to appear before the NACC, the agency could choose to deliver the charges to her by mail. She is required to acknowledge the charges in writing or verbally.

The pro-government protesters said they would set up a stage in front of the NACC office and vowed to seize other independent agencies.

The protesters chained the main gate of NACC office, closed every entrance and exit, and demanded a meeting with Mr Vicha whom they wanted to be removed from the rice probing committee.

Four companies of police officers and one company of army soldiers were deployed around the NACC headquarters. (MCOT online news)
