Loss of 1.1 million tourists expected in 1st quarter

BANGKOK, 27 February 2014 (NNT) – The Tourism Council of Thailand deems that the increase in violence associated with political rallies has negatively affected the confidence of foreign tourists from Japan, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

According to the council, tourists from these markets travel in group tours, and they have been making cancellation of their trips to Thailand and diverting instead to nearby countries.

Several countries have also been raising their travel safety warning level to their citizens, concerning visits to Thailand. 48 countries advised that their citizens exercise special precaution, whereas Hong Kong has raised its warning color code to 'black' level, meaning that a visit would incur significant hazard and all visits should be avoided.

As a result, the council expects to see 1.1 million fewer tourists in the first quarter of the year, consequently causing a drop of 80 billion baht in income for the tourism industry. The council also believes the political crisis will have adverse effects on the tourism scene in the second quarter.

Money--Money, is the only factor. why the big outcry when at times they say tourism is only what was the last 8% ?? of income ??.

If this body is revealing these predictions, What is the other body DOING TAT ?? having vacations ?? do they take turns in B/S Granted levels will drop off but how can you see how much when no one knows what will happen tomorrow..

While it is quiet on the tourism front get these bodies disbanded.---shed them---rubbish.

1,100,000 visitors / 90 days = 12,222.22 vistors / day less.

A jumbojet carries about 400 passengers

So at least 30 jumbojets less per day.

I can hardly believe it. Anyway 30 jumbojets less per day is a lot better for the air quality in Thailand (read Swampy).

Doesn't stop the Thais at what they do best in these (or off season) times....steal. Best to stay clear of all Red-Light districts, Phuket & Pattaya for the term. Idiots...but mafia in Thai terms only presses harder or results to more drastic acts in harder times.

Some of this loss may also be due to the big fall in the Russian Rouble.

The rouble is at a 5 year low and the Russian economy has been slowing considerably during 2013/ 2014.

I like the title TV put to the article. For a moment I was wondering where Thailand managed to lose those 1.1m foreign tourists biggrin.png

All things considered, I personally think tourism has held up remarkably well. If we can believe the arrival numbers 28 ish million?) then a loss of 1.1 million is small percentage wise.

Like it or not, the Thais seem to have nine lives when it comes to the tourist industry :D

This is already happening. Singapore Airlines has cancelled dozens of flights in the past 2 months alone, and will reportedly cancel at least 34? more next month. Numerous other airlines are likely doing the same.

Thailand have near 9 tourist related agencies. and still they do not see the reason behind the losses---It is NOT just the BKK political situ. See the TAT thread I posted on that as well, Why in heavens sake do we have 2 tourist agencies speaking about numbers lost or gained, but both have the same agenda--B/S

Ratchaprasong will look halfways like a ghost town,... You really think domestic or International tourists wanna come there again after that bomb incident from a week ago???

Myself, my Wife and friends are part of that 1.1mil. We canceled our trip after monitoring what's going on. It will probably all work out in the end, but for the first time, I'm not convinced enough yet to go.

Doesn't say if they are referring to calendar year or fiscal year. TAT uses fiscal year (Oct-Sep) - so, if that is the case, they have already lost 1.1 million tourists and probably many more in the 2nd QTR fiscal year.

I imagine it will be exactly the coveted "High-End" tourists who'll change destination, as they have the means to travel somewhere where you won't have grenades thrown at you.

Fear prevents people from living new experiences...

Let's blame it all on politics. Let's not look at all of the safety issues in Thailand. Poor air quality, polluted water, crossing the road as bood sport, 6 ft deep holes in sidewalks, electric wires hanging down everywhere, baht bus crazy rides and violence or the true fear of reporting crime because you do not know who is boss

That is sarcasm

Andre that has to be either the most naive statement I have ever heard about controlling fear. There was a crime in every country in the world including Thailand that went unreported by anyone because they did not know who his boss was. They said if report and he have big boss who make money then they and there family in trouble for reporting. That IS reality for Thai people. So to speak of fear so cavalier is rediculous

My 80 year old mother will be will be returning home to Canada in a couple of weeks after a two month stay. She has had a wonderful

time. She can't understand what the fuss is all about as far as tourists are concerned. A couple of friends are arriving mid March and mid

April. Some people are affected by news reports and others are not. I still believe if you stay away from the protest areas in Bangkok

there is nothing to worry about is excess of what you should already be careful of. Driving cars or scooters, public transportation,

being drunk and stupid at 4am anywhere, and of course lady boys if you have been over served. coffee1.gif

My man no offense, but at 80 yrs old, most people are so close to death that they simply don't give a toss. Death comes to us all

I love ignorant posts like this.

FYI, Suvarnabhumi is not the only way that tourists enter Thailand.

Yep, Tiger Air cancelled my return flight Jakarta - BKK earlier this month.

Another very real problem the drawn out political conflicts are going to bring is problematic. The people who now change travel plans are likely to remember it and will preach it forward. The longer this takes, the heavier the damage to the tourism industry will be, in exponential terms.

Unfortunately by the time it will hurt the pockets of the cronies causing this mess, it will be way too late to fix it.

things can only get worse as both sides are intractable .the future holds no end of trouble regarding things we cant discuss on here ...
