Any Heavy Transport Companies from Chiang Mai to Pai ?

Does anyone know the phone number of a heavy shipping / transport company in Chiang Mai. I want to get 2,000 large concrete blocks from Global House Hardware Store in Hang Dong, Chiang Mai to Pai. Estimated weight 40 tons (40,000 Kg) so I recon I would need an 8 wheeler flatback truck / wagon approx 16m x 2m (approx), or two smaller wagons to ship them.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions, tips, advice.

A truck large enough to carry that weight legally may have trouble with the corners to Pai, it may have to be done in a few trips with a 10 wheel truck, which I think are limited to 16 ton.

Never seen a tractor trailer on that road - corners too sharp.

Tandem dually probably be the largest truck you can use - in N. America generally 17T on drivers. 5T on steer axle.

Hi Dante99,

Checked the weight for the 16"x9"x9" at 32 to 35 Lbs each (according to a couple of websites I found). That's approx 15.9 Kg for the 35lb.

The blocks at Global however are 60cm x 8cm x 8cm with a 75mm wall thickness. That's 23 5/8" x 8" x 8" x 3" wall thickness ! Yes, nearly 2ft long which is a huge block but should be great for what I need.

I'll make another phone call to Global and check the weight (if they have it) of these larger blocks. They only spoke Thai so it has to be communicated through my girl friend who isn't too good at English or construction language so it's a bit of a challenge to say the least (Laughing) !

Anyway, I've estimated the 20 Kilos for now but need to check. Also will find out pallet size and how many on a pallet. The next post has a great suggestion of getting Global to ship from the manufacturer so they'll have the appropriate delivery trucks and off loading equipment.

All in all a bit of a challenge but with the very helpful comments and tips and suggestions from you good folk on Thai Visa, we'll get there ... I'll post / share the sucesses and failures here for the benefit of others wanting to do similar building work. Thank you again for your comments on this, much appreciated.

You are figuring 20 kilos per block which seems high, have you checked the weight? 16"X9"X9 size ?

Transporting blocks in the uk on an artic was limited to 16 packs....about 1300 blocks the total weight being 15 ton.

The longest trucks here on the winding roads as stated are the rigid and drawbar units but for your 2000 blocks you need two.

if you order from global, then ask them to order direct loads for you straight from the supplier.

The supplier will deliver on their own transport and loaded at the factory.

Global don't have a truck bigger than 10ton and don't have the facility to load a truck.

The suppliers truck will be equipped with hiab crane so can offload to exactly where you want them.

Hope you haven't ordered and paid yet, as that's the route you need to take.

By all means use global to place an order but you need merchant rate on this quantity that involved truckloads.

Hi Eyecatcher,

That's an absolutely brilliant idea and would save a heap of potential problems too ! Sounds like you've had some very useful experience in transport. I used to be in construction myself but getting old now and wasn't particularly looking forward to loading and off-loading 2,000 or so blocks, so your suggestion is very gratefully received.

Fortunately I haven't ordered yet. I'll get my girlfrind to phone (Global office folk only spoke Thai on the last calls, so I have to communicate through my girlfriend which is challenging in itself :-). Anyway I'll see if they can do as you suggest, then go to Global in the next few days and actually check the blocks out before confirming an order.

I'll post the results here in due course for the benfit of others who might want to do something similar.

Thank you once again for your interest and help eyecatcher. Very much appreciated.
