Teach Your Children to Laugh at Racism and Bigotry!

Featured Replies

There are lots and lots of threads about racism floating around TV. However none of them are fun to read about. Well I thought I'd let everyone in on a little story that's about to be told by The Chiang Mai International School Drama Department called "Finian's Rainbow".

Finian’s Rainbow is a musical set in a mythical Southern American state called Missitucky, where an Irish man and his daughter have travel to bury a pot of gold at the site of Fort Knox in hopes that the gold will grow and multiply. When they realize they have been followed by a leprechaun, mistakes and confusions collide creating a fun musical comedy. Featuring music by Burton Lane and lyrics by EY Harburg the show features several very popular songs such as ‘Look to the Rainbow’ and ‘Old Devil Moon’ which have been covered by various artists around the world. The original Broadway production opened in January 1947 at the 46th street Theater in New York where it ran for 725 performances.

The cast of students, ranging from elementary to high school, will bring new life to the old-fashioned musical comedy that touches on issues of immigration, and turns a comical eye on bigotry and racial injustice.

I attended a rehearsal yesterday and it is shaping up to be very funny well put together show and appropriate for all ages. You may want to bring along your skin whitening cream for the antagonist of this play. He may come out into the audience and take it from you!

Nice musical with great songs. I saw it a long, long time ago in the USA. Too bad I don't live in Chiang Mai. I'd be in attendance for sure.

I'm amazed that anyone could make such a hyperjump between a high school play and racism on this board.

If you'd explain your statement I feel relatively sure I could respond to it.

Thanks

i expected a different read from the suggested title.

Yes.

I am sure. That was my intention when I created the title.

Don't be fooled by the number of posts I have. I've been living in Thailand (Chiang Mai) for a good number of years and reading TV longer than that. The number of foreigners complaining about racism in Thailand hasn't escaped me. Some of those folks could use a laugh or two.
