Can report there is a service charge plus vat, thus 17% added to the bill though the chain isn't anywhere near a hotel. Also can report, after talking to a many of Thai staff, the service charge doesn't go to the service people. Same but worse in Malaysia, the extra tax goes to the owner. Thou in Malaysia, so do 80+% of the tips.

If truly, like your service, DO NOT leave your tip on the table. Indiscreetly fold it in your hand & give it (lower than table height) to your service attendant.

On another note, there isn't anything even close to real Mexican food in Thailand, better yet Bangkok.

Don't understand your post, the topic is about the closing of the Sunrise Tacos at Jomtien and the reopening of Subs N Steaks. It has nothing to do with other businesses under the same name. Your implication is there is a 17% for VAT which includes a 10% gratuity. That is not correct. Any gratuity is up to the customer. The VAT is not hidden but added to the bill for full transparency. The restaurant quickly modified their menu to show the charge. See photo.

The VAT is not hidden but added to the bill for full transparency.

An unusual interpretation of "transparency".

For me transparency means "the price advertised is the price you pay". Anything else is obfuscation as far as I'm concerned.

And perhaps others who are comfortable with the socialistic economies of Europe feel the same way. If I was a politician from one of these countries I too would try to hide taxes from the consumers eyes. It's easy to forget what you don't see. I wonder what VAT actually makes it to the government coffers from these small shops and restaurants that give you a hand written or adding machine tape check bill.

Would you have them itemise all the social security contributions, energy costs and the building rent and add them all to the final bill also?

Everyone in Europe knows full well that VAT is charged on just about everything at their national rate (which is commonly around 20%). There's no way of not paying it if you are buying as an individual and so it may as well be included. The same applies here.

The correct way of displaying what the actual cost of the tax is by quoting the full price followed by "incl. xxx VAT", and this allows both individuals and businesses to know exactly what they are paying and how much a thing is costing them.

I always thought that all prices directed at retail customers had to include vat.

That is the case, at least in civilised countries.

Noticed this post on Sunrise Tacos Facebook page, re the coming closure/re-opening/relocations of their main BKK branch.

A brand new Sunrise restaurant rises at Sukhumvit rd, corner of Soi 13...overcoming the closing of the Sukhumvit Soi 12 location later at the end of this year when a office building project starts. Expectant opening at Soi 13 location is July 4th.

You understand transparency. Some people don't.

"Transparency" as far as pricing in menus is concerned is providing a price in a way that anyone of minimal intelligence and education can understand and evaluate it.

Please, explain to me in transparency terms how one of the following two menu entries is superior to the other:

-- Spaghetti bolognaise B200*

*prices do not include 7% VAT

-- Spaghetti bolognaise B214*

*prices include 7% VAT.

If either of you two "rocket scientists" believe that one menu price is more "transparent" or more "ethical" or is laden with "obfuscation", you suffer from dilusion and gross incapacity and should not be eating in restaurants in Thailand, or any where else for that matter, except perhaps in a thriving "nanny state" that is geared up to protect the most mentally crippled. Even my 6 year old could figure this one out, with out help.

I'm amazed that this should need explaining.

The second price is the only accurate one as it is the one that the client will actually pay. To show any other price is simply inaccurate and, in civilised countries, illegal.

Optional extras (drinks, dessert, take-away boxes, corkage) can be listed as extras of course, but extras that are not optional should be included in the displayed price.

In the US, for example, sales tax, which varies in percentage state-by-state, is never (or rarely) shown or mentioned in the menu, but is (unless restaurant food is exempt from sales tax in a partucular state, alcoholic drinks are never exempt) always added with no advance notice or warning as to the amount (typically, 5 to 10%) to the bill at the time of payment -- OUTRAGE!!!. Perhaps the US is also "uncivilized" -- no argument there.

The issue of "transparency" is not that the customer sees in the menu what he will pay, seldom is that the case, as there will always be added charges, but does he know or can he determine in advance with reasonable accuracy what he will be charged and is the price stated in sufficiently clear terms that a person of reasonable intelligence can make that determination. In both cases above, the customer easily can. They are both "transparent"!

As I said, you lack the capacity or understanding to order food in a restaurant -- better you eat at home (do you have any idea what a meal costs there?) or in a "civilized country" -- there must be one, some where....

I am aware of how purchased items are priced in the US and I find it reprehensible. As far as eating out in the US goes I find their notion of systematic tipping due to the staff not getting proper salaries to be reprehensible also.

But what can one say about a country in which the death penalty is still legal and where many people carry guns and which has the highest percentage of population incarcerated in the entire world? They have a lot of progress to make.

If you really want to play silly buggers you can claim you own your own company (a house will do) and are obligated by Thai law to deduct 3% WHT (Withholding Tax) from the Bill.

That it has a very efficient and "successful" legal justice system, thanks in large part to all of its very capable lawyerswai2.gif . But certainly, if it gets its menu pricing mess in order, everything else will fall into place rapidly. Progress (or lack thereof) is obviously in the mind of the beholder.....

Not open for lunch I noticed.

I've gone by several times hoping to see them open at noon.

The new place, LaBaquette has been getting my lunch money.

Greedy?

I think it's probably because they need to turn over the tables.

Too many cheap Charlie's around that abuse the free wifi and take up space.

I have a friend that owns a restaurant and some shameless bastards order a water or coffee and think that gives them free wifi privileges for hours and hours.

A comfortable air conditioned office for free!

I visit to Subs n Steaks a few nights ago. Had the angus burger and a friend had an imported ribeye. We were both disappointed. Previously my burger was delicious but this visit we believe the beef had been "extended" and was not 100% beef. The paddy was huge but that doesn't make up for comprising the taste. I will give this place one last chance simply because I like the menu choices.

Apparently the new place Subs n Steaks which replaced the closed Jomtien Sunrise Tacos is now ALSO closed! w00t.gif

Condolences to the investors and staff.

And so it goes.

Probably they retired already, because according to some ( always the same) posters on this forum, Pattaya is flourishing these days

Pretty draft idea to begin with...I mean, who ever heard of a submarine sandwich and steak house before! I guess it served its purpose to launder some money or like someone said, so many tourists in town they made a mint in a couple months and retired.

The owner is the former owner of Sunrise Tacos who decided to rebrand the restaurant. The concept was subs for lunch and steaks for dinner. He opened during Song Kran week, that in itself was a poor decision. Then there was an issue with the VAT, whether it was or was not included. I had several good meals when they first opened but several questionable ones just before they closed. The owner says it is a temporary closure until things improve here in Pattaya. Personally I think it's best he just sells and forgets about reopening.

Sells exactly what? I doubt the lease is up to date. I know for a fact he was behind on his payments for Sunrise. The equipment? I don't think will bring much if and only if not part of the lease which as I say is in no doubt in default.

That reminds me, in case some didn't know, the "Taco House" which opened on Soi Bouikow for a few months and copied some of the "Sunrise" food, has now closed. It was actually decent and a good location.

Traffic is way down in Pattaya but the strong do survive, especially those with good beer prices.

It was pointed out on another thread that Taco House is moving to Central shopping mall.
