Thai Police sting nets near-perfect counterfeit US dollars

Featured Replies

By the looks of the bills I would bet they were made in North Korea, they are very good at that sort of thing.

When and where did you get a look at the bills? However, you may well be correct. From what I read, North Korea does have a large industry of producing high quality counterfeit dollars. Given the massive damage this does to the American economy, I'd say the North Korean government is fair game for some drone fun.

its only what the US Fed has been doing since 2008......................

Great post but I'd have to say it started in 1913 or at the very latest in1971 when Nixon took the dollar off the Gold Standard. coffee1.gif

Please explain the logic of US coming off the gold standard causing counterfeiting of dollars.

coffee1.gif one wonders just how good the counterfeit job is if they are willing to sell them at a greater than 50% discount on face value and for thai baht at that!

Since you are the expert here. What is the usual price for counterfeit $100 bills.

Actually I'm surprised the fake bills were so expensive. Once the counterfeiters get the proper paper, ink, and printing technology, it's relatively easy to print many more bills. However, the final seller in the network is the one with the most exposure and the most likely to get busted ... and so, I assume they're going to want as low a price as possible. It's likely that the sale of counterfeit bills is very similar to the illegal sales of drugs, in that the higher-ups make the most money overall because of bulk sales, but the last seller in the sales chain make the most profit per unit. Actually, this is pretty much how most legal sales work also.

consumer protection police officials?????

anywhere else in the world it would be handled by the equivalent to the FBI or similar...

Arrests were made so what does it matter? Maybe the US equivalent of the 'consumer protection police' aren't bright enough to pull off an operation like this and would need to hand it over to the FBI or similar.

It's the US Secret Service that handles investigation and arrest of counterfeiters ... not the FBI.

Fake Louis Vuittons, Fake Monks, Fake Women, Fake job offers, fake cocaine, fake rolex sold on silom sidewalk - everything fake so fake dollar is not a surprise in the hub of fakes

Well, I'd think it's pretty self explanatory but I'll tell ya, Before then, our money said, "will pay the the bearer on demand, redeemable in silver or gold." A 50 dollar bill at that time bought more than an ounce of gold which costed about $41 in 1971.. today a 50 dollar bill will barely buy a "gram" of gold... and if it wasn't taken off the standard that same $50.00 bill would now be valued at aprox. $1,500.00. Instead of the "Dollar" greatly appreciating it has greatly depreciated. I'd hope you can see now the difference.

btw, I actually didn't even get to the part about the FED printing more Trillions upon Trillions of dollars on top of this already giant Ponzi Scheme.. Some wise minds say that our dollar has lost more than 98% of it's value, since 1913, when the Fed was created.

thats a tired argument

there were no other developed economies at that time other than europe, and they wwere struggling to recover from WW2, for part of your history lesson

the Japanese had no economy, not did China

there werent a billion autos requiring fuel either

people were also paid $20.00 a week which is now $2,000 a week,

purchasing power in gold is great, but you cannot eat or drink gold, nor cook it for your family,

those arguments dont cover the facts

Just passing on a rumor - BUYER BEWARE...!!!

A local friend - name withheld,- but, I have seen him on youtube and international TV - has said that the Chinese Government has been counterfeiting USD for quite a while.

That on a recent visit to Cambodia, he encountered a large number of these counterfeit bills.

By the looks of the bills I would bet they were made in North Korea, they are very good at that sort of thing.

Correct.

Yet the article claims they were produced in a "neighboring" country. Yeah right, like anyone in dirt poor Cambodia, Laos or Myanmar has the resources and materials to produce such good quality notes. If these notes were faked in the region, one need look no further than Thailand itself. However, I agree with you that North Korea is most likely, as they are widely accused of being the hub of fake US dollar bills. Thailand in this case is likely merely a trading hub - and given that one can apparently fly direct from Pyongyang to Bangkok on Air Koryo (who the hell is catching these flights and why do they even exist, certainly not Thai tourists! Similarly, North Korea doesn't produce any tourists), it's easy to see how they made their way from North Korea to Thailand.

you don't have a clue Cambodia is dirt poor but they are corrupt to the core so its a playground for the making all types of contraband.

I have spent plenty of time in Cambodia. They barely make anything there - it's much cheaper and more efficient to produce in Thailand or Vietnam. Yes, the US dollar is the de-facto currency of Cambodia however that doesn't mean they would be able to produce fake US dollars there. When it comes to international criminal syndicates based in the region, they generally operate out of Thailand or Malaysia. The infrastructure is there, it's easy to come and go, there are flights to just about anywhere and lots of foreigners already.
