Homemade bomb kills three police officers

4-26-2014-11-20-01-AM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

Three police officers died and 15 others injured when a bomb exploded during a fishing competition in Saiburi district of Pattani on Friday night.

The bomb attack came as security authorities earlier warned of possible violence ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Krusae mosque massacre in Pattani, one of the bloodiest events in the violence plagued southern border provinces.

The coming Monday is the 10th anniversary of the Krusae massacre in Pattani’s Muang district where 32 militants were killed.

Killed in the explosion last night were Pol Lance Corporals Charnyuth Kaenpet, Surasit Charoenpon and Apirak Saefu.

About 15 others, including five border police, were injured, Saiburi police said.

Police said the 15-kilo cooking gas tank bomb was triggered to explode by mobile phone call.

The explosion caused a 50 centimetre deep and 80 centimetre wife crater on the road.

They are looking into CCTV cameras to hunt down the culprits.

This coming Monday is the 10th anniversary of the Krusae massacre in Pattani’s Muang district.

The Krusae incident sparked the revival of a long-dormant insurgency movement and a decade of continuing violence that has taken nearly 6,000 lives.

King releases fishes into sea

1975092_634123636658646_7728081842132434

His Majesty the King on Thursday traveled from Klai Kangwon Palace in Hua Hin to Rim Thale Noi sea beach near the palace's Plab Pla Kaoliem pavilion to release a number of fishes including milkfish, blue-spotted grouper, coral grouper and tiger grouper into the Gulf of Thailand.

The King released the fishes after he granted an audience to the director-general of the Fisheries Department and his team to report to the progress of a royally initiated project to promote milkfish aquaculture.

Fisheries Department director-general Niwat Suthi-mechaikul gave a briefing as well as VDO presentation to His Majesty the King on the propagation, farming and development of milkfish, known locally as Pla Nuan Chan, following a royal advice to encourage local people to raise the fish as a supplementary occupation to increase their income.

Milkfish, or Chanos Chanos in scientific name, is native to tropical sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is an important seafood in many countries like the Philippines and China because of its fast-growing quality, persistence to disease and good taste. As the fish feeds on both plankton and algae, its farming requires lower investment than meat-eating fish.

In Thailand, the fish is mostly found off the coast of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Phetchaburi and Trat. His Majesty the King first observed milkfish aquaculture at a fishery station in Prachuap Khiri Khan in 1965. He found that the fish grew well even in ponds with low salinity and fetched a good price. He then used personal money to buy a number of milkfish for release into Khao Tao Reservoir in Hua Hin, but at that time milkfish farming was not popular as locals understood that the fish spawned only in marine water. During the past several decades, the Fisheries Department had therefore conducted continuously an experiment to propagate the fish in response to the royal determination to promote milkfish aquaculture.

In 2005 the department met a success in breeding the milkfish on a commercial basis through breed improvement. It was able to accelerate the fish to give out-of-season spawning, conduct artificial insemination and raise the survival rate of the fry.
At present, milkfish farming has become more popular, mostly in Prachuap Khiri Khan.
Milkfish aquaculture usually takes 8 months before harvesting. It requires an investment of about 25 to 30 baht for a kilo of fish and yields up to 70 baht per kilo upon their sale.

And because milkfish is notorious for being much bonier than other food fish, the Fisheries Department has publicized the technique widely practiced in the Philippines.

Milkfish processing has also been encouraged by the department to boost the popularity and add value to the product. The Department’s effort has led to the establishment of the milkfish processing community enterprise of Ban Khlong Wan under the royal initiative in Prachuap Khiri Khan.

May likely to be hottest month: Meteorological Department

PNSOC570426001005301_26042014_025233.JPE

BANGKOK, 26 April 2014 (NNT) —From the beginning of May to the middle of the month is likely to be the hottest part of the year, according to the Thai Meteorological Department.

“Though April 27 is expected to be the hottest day due to the sun being at its most direct point over Thailand, the coming thunderstorms and strong winds from now till April 30 are likely to blow away the hot weather,” said Songkran Agsorn, Deputy Director-General for Technical Services.

The weather is forecast to be sizzling hot till mid-May and then start to cool down and go into the rainy season, starting in the South.

The public is warned to closely monitor weather forecast news and prepare for summer storms between April 26 and 30.

Durian in Uttaradit wilts in prolonged summer heat

BANGKOK, 26 April 2014 (NNT) – The intense and prolonged summer heat has ruined a large swathe of durian plantations in Uttaradit and robbed the durian growers of their flavorsome fruit.

Durian trees in Uttaradit reportedly either didn't bear fruit, bore fruit that cannot be eaten, or bore fruit that was spoilt. Some durian trees are also dying, as their leaves turn brown because of the severe heat.

Local farmers said that summer arrived sooner than normal this year, and has also lasted for a long time. This forced the durian trees to let their flowers and new fruit wilt away to preserve precious water within the trunk. The damage in the province's main durian cultivating districts is estimated at 100 million baht.

Local growers said they still hoped for rain to fall soon, so the durian trees might start to flower and fruit again.
