We have relatives arriving tomorrow who are staying a couple of days before backpacking around SE Asia, they need back packs before they travel, can anybody advise the best place to obtain in Bangkok?

Thanks in advance.

MBK has plenty of shops with them. My daughter bought hers there last year. Prices are reasonable and even better if you haggle a little.

It sounds too late but they would have been better to bring them.

Anything in MBK will not be of good enough quality to last long.

Have a look in Supersports in any Central department store. They stock the real thing unlike the copies at MBK. They have top hiking brands such as North Face, Deuter, etc. You will pay prices to match the quality though.

I have ,over the years , bought a few copy backpacks and they have served me as well as some of the original name packs/bags i have had. If you examine the stitching, the material, the design and if the price is right and they are going to only use it a short time and then discard it before they return home , then the copies may well serve their purpose. Some are good, some are not. Just don't get conned into paying over the top prices for something that is a copy though.

I've nothing but bad luck w/ copy backpacks. The cheap zippers are the first to break--when it's least convenient. Original quality is well worth the extra money.

Agree with JSixpack.

Copies look the part and feel the part, but they will let you down at the worst time - zips breaking at airports, straps breaking when trekking, seams splitting when walking.

Spend the extra cash and get a decent pack for the purpose it will be used for.

Not a great selection in BKK, but there is a couple of stores at the back of Amarin Plaza, and at Siam Discovery - with lots of other bits and pieces that might be useful for backpacking - stuff bags, head torches, toilet bags, first aid kits, jackets, Teva's etc.

travelin' gear is funny as the question of buying quality goods arises when there are knock-offs that maybe can do the job for a fraction of the price...I used to climb and I always bought the best because I knew that the equipment wouldn't fail me when I need it to perform...

ain't nothin' worse than to have the zippers break or the handles come off when you're in a busy airport...then the whole outfit goes to shit as goods and documents get lost and etc, stumblin' around and there are predators everywhere looking for distress and weakness...

best to find a legitimate outfitter with authentic products...if such is available in BKK, otherwise maybe better to stay at home with the fake 'North Face' book bag...in the old days I always favored Kelty, Sierra Designs and Lowa for packs, sleeping bags and boots, respectively as you needed hellfire to destroy their products....

I do not buy copy goods at all on principle and they are not allowed to be imported into Japan. I do still have an "oakley" bum bag I bought on Suk more than 10 years ago.

I fo think however as long as one does not overload , small copy bags& camera packs will be OK.

Your main battle bag for the SE Asia on a shoestring thing has to be the real deal however or it will fail on you at a bad time.

There is a good shop across the road at the Western end of Khao San Road.(opposite side to Burger King) They have good and bad copies defined by price. Get a good one and bargain hard.

Good luck!
