I usually pay about 750 baht at Makro for Allowrie or Anchor but that is for a 5kg pack.

I then slice it into about 24 pieces, bag it individually and freeze it. I have been doing it for years.

It still tastes Ok and at 250 baht per kg is much cheaper than the smaller packs.

Also done the same for many years here..

Also buy the big blocks of Anchor cheese at Makro, but do not freeze the cheese as goes hard and crumbly..... cut into blocks coat each block in butter [melt and brush on] wrap in cling film, last 8+ months perfectly in the fridge.

I usually buy Orchid butter, have done for years, then last week

i bought a 1kg block of Anchor,just to try it,and its terrible,has a

slight rancid, oily taste,it does not even melt in the sun,its like

Plasticine, so i have to spread it very thin, too much you can taste

it, The wife does not eat butter, which is how i usually get rid of stuff

i buy and don't like,as she will eat almost anything.

So i will try making some scones and pies, just hope that taste does

not spoil them.one thing for sure, butter now is not the same as when

i was a lad, remember those big barrels of Danish butter in the grocers

that was 100% butter, thats the problem today you just don't know what

you are eating,additives,modified,processed,chemicals and GM,Food

glorious food ,defiantly not what it used to be.

That's a really interesting technique for preserving cheese. I never heard of it. Your invention?

As for the Allowrie at Makro..that's a mixture of butter oil, vegetable oil, water, milk powder and, if it's salted, salt. Actually, I think it tastes pretty good. Not up there with the best butter, but a reasonable substitute. Works quite well in baking also.

I didn't cite the brand again because I didn't want to sound like I was shilling for the company. It's Emborg and costs 85 baht per 200 grams at Makro. It was recommended to me by the old French chef in Chiang Mai whose son owns La Fourchette.

Nope was what my Mother use to do when I was a kid...only not cling wrap... just covered in the pantry..... we did not have a fridge, we did not even have electricity back then.

Why would you use something that tastes bad to cook and think that the outcome will be good. It 's like people who save bad tasting wine to cook with and wonder why the outcome tastes like s**t! Throw it away if it rancid!

must be better than using lard that's been rendered down.

next time your passing through[korat]call in and have a pie and a pint.

Lard and butter are both delicious in pastry crusts if they are not rancid. If they are rancid, why bother?.

Well i made some scones and pork pies with that Anchor butter,it was not rancid,

just not same taste as Orchid, they are ok,better than dumping it.

There was a guy on the Chiang Mai forum, going on about some butter that is

made in Thailand, and its real butter,no oil, milk powder, etc. all i know it comes

in 5 Kg, blocks in a black box, anyone heard of it?,for some reason Yoke bakery

supplies stopped stocking it and there is no distributor up here.

I bought LurPak Danish Butter Slightly Salted yesterday at Food Mart in Jomtien

The ingredients are: Cream, Lactic Starter, and 1.2% salt.

200g

254 THBT.

It may be a little cheaper in some of the other stores.

I am going to do a side by side comparison with Emborg soon.

I tried both butters side by side. Both are good. I can't tell the difference. So far out of there two butters Emborg seems to be the better value.

I smoke cigs so I may not be able to tell any slight differences.

I plan to try President and the French Brand sometime.

Well, according to Thai food laws, the reconstituted butter is considered pure butter. So you still have to look at the ingredients and source of manufacture. If it doesn't come from New Zealand, it probably isn't butter made from churning cream.

I didn't have time to read the ingrediants as I stopped buying anchor [produced in indoneisa] but the sign must have been fixed to the butter shelf by someone with common sense, right in front eye highth you couldn't miss it.

I understand there is or was two types of Anchor butter here (Other than salted and unsalted) one seems to be butter and one not.

There is a kind imported directly from New Zealand into Thailand. That is the real thing.

has anybody bought the real thing.

I can remember the huge stacks of salty butter that you could get in the markets in the valleys, the Italians when they first came to wales and opened up the "brachi's" ohhhhhhhhh thick toast and salty 100%butter dripping down your chin.

but what we are getting here is oil.

You can get the real thing if you're willing to pay for it. Lots of real butter is imported from Europe. I like Emborg which goes for 85 baht for 200 grams at Makro. Comes both salted and unsalted.

Was Bt.85 Korat Marko last week.

Odd that because it is the local brands which I don't like, but Anchor is just fine for me.

I accidentally had a look at Emburg packaging and at the back you will see BE CO 437 CE.

This refers to a Belgian butter company: http://www.agral.be/en.

I used to live in Belgium and remember my mother buying butter from a big round tower weighing probably 10kg, they just cut off a piece according to your weigh wish.

Whilst this company produces butter for supermarkets I guess the quality to be acceptable and tastes better than Orchid or Anchor (where are these manufactured anyway?)

Nevertheless I prefer President butter I buy at TOPS.

And whats up with this butter "product" or butter spread? Ive seen them try and pass off as real butter, something like 42%?

Yes, pure creamery butter in Thailand is only required to be about 80% butter. For example. Allowrie brand:

Ingredients

Butter Oil 80%, Milk Powder 2%, Iodized Salt 2%

Emulsifier (INS471, INS322), Natural Colour Added (INS160a(ii)), Natural Identical Flavour (artificial flavor) Added.
