Infinity on Nimmanhamin--Foreigner's and Tourist pay 200 baht

Featured Replies

I had a wild hair on Thursday night (it occasionally happens) and decided to check out the after-hours options on Nimmanhamin. First, as you might expect, they are limited. There are a number of bars on the sois that will continue selling a little late if the number of customers warrant it and the police aren't being too vigilant, but for a proper late place all I found was Tawan Daeng, (ok for a group of friends but not great for solo mingling) and Infinity. It was clear that Infinity had some customers, but from what I could see and hear it wasn't that great. What caught my eye was a sign posted at the entrance that stated "Foreigners and tourist pay 200 baht".

I didn't go in to see if there was anything going on to justify the price; I seriously doubt it. Even though I live nearby I've never been in Infinity, I assumed it wasn't my kind of place, and am even more sure of that now. I'm just curious, is this entrance fee something new? Is there anyone who thinks Infinity is worth walking across the street to enter? Other than being open after hours, is there any reason to go in?

A topic from December showing the 200 Baht. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/686737-discrimination/

Thanks, I missed that one in December. So the fee has been there a while, it's not always enforced, and it doesn't seem there's anything special about Infinity other than being open late. Kind of what I suspected; it wasn't completely dead around 2 a.m. on Thursday, but it didn't look interesting.

Your two options do appear limited; but you failed to mention the two biggest clubs....monkey and warm up.

If the crowds are anywhere they will be there.

Having said that you possibly chose about the worst day of the worst week of the worst month for seeing people.

May 2nd week,no one has money, songran they spent up, all tourists disappear the two week following a big event.

Thursday night? Wouldn't those who can still hang on til salary day enjoy the friday or saturday instead?

So I am not surprised you found it disappointing.

Not up to date on the two I mentioned but when I have been before there was no charge for anyone.

The reason you need to pay is simply because they are a bit xenophobic and like to be tipped by people they look up to.

That's a positive way of looking at it.

I will remember that one ....

But they look up to us anyway don't they?

Been there multiple times since the fee was posted and have not had to pay. However there was one time where a few white guys were making drunken asses out of themselves and climbed on stage etc. I see why they would post the entrance fee. I wish these types of tourists wold stick to Zoe's, and other bars around Tapae...

Can't say I blame them.

If I was running a middle-class Thai place, that just wanted to focus on that market, I would want to deter others too. They would probably be more home at Spicy anyway.

Just like many places in the South have No Israeli signs.

I've never known Monkey or Warm-Up to keep selling after hours. I've been to both a few times during regular hours and wasn't impressed, there are many other options during regular hours that I prefer.

Regarding timing, Tawan Daeng had a decent crowd for 2 a.m. on a Thursday night/Friday morning. It wasn't packed, but about half full (keep in mind it's a huge place) and it still had live music. It wasn't my type of place, but obviously some people were still getting out.

As for going in, I enjoy club music and when the live band comes on they play a lot of 90's/00's Thai rock like Big Ass and Silly Fools. If you can carry a conversation on in Thai most of the people in the place are friendly. The same is true in most Thai bars

There are plenty of other places open late, but they too have an entrance fee for foreigners or are just not the place to be unless you are with Thai friends

Mandalay, Fabrique, Differ are a few. Bangkok Bar is open late and is Foreigner friendly, but it's a dive bar with live bands, not a club.

On a side note, I found Mandalay and Fabrique to be quite unfriendly, even if you came with Thai friends and have a handle on the language.

I know there are places around the old city that are open late, I wanted to see what, if anything, is around Nimmanhamin. I'm also more interested in bars than clubs, I find that in clubs the music is usually so loud I can't carry on a conversation in any language. Plus I'd look silly on a dance floor with women less than half my age and half my size.

Bangkok Bar (Bangkok Cafe?), do you mean the place between Miguel's and Spice? I've met the owner, friend of a friend, he's a good guy. I don't think of it as a dive, but then I've always had low-brow tastes. If it were in staggering distance of where I live I'd probably be there on occasion.

Around Nimman they all close by 1am-ish and sometimes you can chill til 2am. Vision seems to follow this, but you often see people drinking out side much later after the place has closed. Don't know about Harem and the other small bars along canal road on the way back in.

I really like Bangkok, but I still just call it a dive bar because I usually compare it to places like Warm, Monkey, etc.

There are a few bars up the soi from where the Mikes Burgers was on Nimman. There are a few places across the intersection, don't know about their closing time.

What are you looking for, open to 3-4am? Is just Thai beer ok or a place with a few international choices?

You might give Manung Bar a try. It is on Soi Suk Kasem, about 50 meters west of Nimmanhaemin. (I think this is the area BlackArtemis is referring to when he mentions Mike's Burger. That was on the corner of Soi 2 and there are no bars up there (unless I am wrong, and I often am.)

Manung served me after 1 AM but this was around Songkran, so I am not sure if they always would or not. They seem to get a decent crowd (Thai-only) and it is not too loud. But I doubt you could get a beer there really late, like after 2 AM.

Let us know what you find out. I also live in the area and have a friend visiting in September, so I need to brush up on what's going on in my own neighborhood.

You're right, I meant up the soi from Jeffer's Steak

"Is there anyone who thinks Infinity is worth walking across the street to enter? Other than being open after hours, is there any reason to go in?"

The name would suggest that it is endless fun. I would not question a well established mathematical concept.

I'm not looking for anything specific, I'm just curious about options in walking distance of my condo. I was with a friend in Blar Blar until they started closing, around 12:30, my friend went home and I decided to see what else was available. Maldives served me after 1 a.m. but they started to close around 2 a.m. I was walking back to Nimmanhamin from there and noticed the 200 baht sign on Infinity. Had it not been for the sign I might have gone in even though it didn't look promising. Instead I went to Tawan Daeng; it was far from full but still had a decent crowd and Thai entertainment on stage. It wasn't what I was looking for so after one beer I called it a night.

During Songkran a waitress at DeGarden told me that the closing times are usually enforced on the main road of Nimmanhamin, but that the bars on the sois will stay open late if there are enough customers to justify it and the police aren't being a nuisance. During Songkran many places stayed open late, but the rest of the year I don't think there are usually enough late drinkers to justify it.

If I were looking for anything in particular it would be a relaxed place with decent food and beer, friendly staff and pretty waitresses (of course) that is open at all hours; maybe something like Neighborhood bar on soi 17 but open all night. It probably doesn't exist in the Nimmahamin area, but I thought I'd check.

Last Thursday I looked through the door of the disco a little before midnight and it looked pretty sedate--there were people inside but they weren't doing much.

That's ok, I've never been a fan of loud noise and crowded places. I'm just looking for a relaxed place with good food, pretty ladies and cold beer. The restaurant part of Blar Blar works fine before midnight.

Huh? The Thai way of life doesn't include "a relaxed place with good food, pretty ladies and cold beer."? I bet I could find quite a few Thai people, and even a few universities full of Thai people, who would disagree.

Come to think of it I might have been the only "typical farang" in Blar Blar late Thursday night. I had a great time and no one objected to my presence. I just wanted to see what was available after they closed.

So I was out last night at Full Moon since I wanted to smoke Shisha/Hooka and Salim on Soi 5 is being torn down. Anyways, they made a new bar on Soi 13 right near the turn off into the Fullmoon/Baan din side soi.

At 1am it was jam packed, I am guessing it might be going on til 2? It's part of a newer shophouse row, it takes up 2 or 3 houses. It has a Magenta/Neighborhood/90's kind of vibe to it.

That's interesting, and easy for me to check out, though not tonight obviously. Thanks for the info.
