Chirathivat beats Chearavanont to become Thailand’s richest family

BANGKOK: -- The Chirathivat family has now become Thailand's richest family beating agribusiness tycoon Dhanin Chearavanont for the top slot among Thailand's 50 richest families.

Fugitive prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra retains his status as the country’s 10th-richest man despite a decline in his net worth.

The Chirathivat family that owns Central Group, a retail and hotel conglomerate, jumped to No.1 for the first time, buoyed by 27% growth in group revenue to US$7 billion last year.

According to the “Thailand’s 50 Richest” rankings released yesterday by Forbes Thailand magazine, the Chirathivat came on top with US$12.7 billion in retail and real estate.

Coming after are

Dhanin Chearavanont & family of US$11.5 billion,

Charoen Sirivadhabhakdi US$11.3 billion,

Chalerm Yoovidhya US$9.9 billion B, and Krit Ratanarak US$5.1 billion.

Others are
6. Vanich Chaiyawan $3.9 billion, insurance, beverages,
7. Santi Bhirombhakdi & family $2.8 billion, energy drinks,
8. Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth $2.3 billion, hospitals,
9. Vichai Maleenont & family $1.7 billion, media, and
10. Thaksin Shinawatra & family $1.7 billion, investments.

How many people have been killed by the misadventure of their family members without justice being served, would be an interesting measurement.

...and the list of endowments to charities ? Won't find any Bill gates or Chuck feeney style philanthropy with this lot

How do you know that? A rhetorical question, of course, you don't know.

Apart from the "Red Bull" accident what makes you think that these families have killed more people than, say, your family? Why should wealthy people be accused of being killers...envy?

Well if you compare this with the high-water mark of the $1.63 billion in bank accounts identified by the Assets Examination Committee in 2007 (some confiscated; some later returned), it hardly looks as though Thaksin has been shovelling money out of the national treasury from afar on a vast scale Others have been building their capital much faster,.

Does anyone know if any of them are self-made, i.e. from rags to riches through hard graft ?

Funny you should ask actually: nearly all of them: 3 out of 4 ..... Or their father:

Number 4: - Chaleo Yoovidhya : Various news sources suggest Chaleo was born in Central Thailand at some point between 1922 and 1932,[4] to a poor Thai-Chinese family that raised ducks and traded fruit in Phichit.

Number 3: Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi: Like most of Thailand's tycoons, Charoen is ethnic Chinese. He is the sixth of 11 children of a poor street vendor who migrated to Bangkok from southern China. He left school early, at the age of nine, to work.[1]

Number 1: Chirathivat family : It is well known that the business of Central Group has been managed by members of the “Chirathivat” family for over 60 years, beginning from a small grocery shop

Is the true wealth of the Shins really known or do they have a ' little something ' well hidden ?

That is between them and their maids.

Except your knight and shining weasel, falling down to number 10, if you don't include the hidden assets and in other family members' names. He made lots of nice charity to armed thugs in 2010 and such; that's pretty benevolent.

Interesting that they all look nothing like Thais, but more like civilians of a 5 yellow starred red flag country! whistling.gif

"Interesting that they all look nothing like Thais"

I love it when people make such bizarre statements. Is there a mould that Thais come from?

Just exactly what does a real Thai look like?

For example I think the great Native American leader Sitting Bull would find it hard to believe that Barack Obama is also an American (Thousands would disagree with that statement BTW).

Chinese Thais immigrated into the kingdom over a century ago and have contributed to its growth and have also enriched themselves and their families by dint of hard work and saviness. In some way they can be compared to the Jews with their business acumen and savings ethics.
