A little confused here. I thought I could get one on arrival but re-reading the Wikipedia page it looks like I need to apply online and well in advance. Would someone care to advise please?

There is no Visa On Arrival for tourists. There can be a pre-arranged visa if you are travelling in a group, or going through a Myanmar travel agent - but this needs to be applied for in advance. You cannot at this stage just turn up off a flight as an independent traveller, and arrive at the airport to apply for a visa.
