Flash flood inundates community roads in a village in Chumphon Province

CHUMPHON, 25 June 2014 (NNT) - Torrential rains in Chumphon province have brought in flash floods from the Tanao Si mountain range, causing water to overflow and block off community roads in a village at Tha Sae District.

Wongsak Channual, a village elder, stated Chumphon province has been battered by heavy rains for the past week. According to him, a flash flood from the mountains has destroyed a check dam built at the U-San canal. The dam was unable to hold large volumes of water, causing flood waters to overflow into local roads.

More than 70 households and at least 300 villagers were unable to depart from their communities, leaving them trapped within the area.

Mr. Wongsak said that most of the villagers made a living as rubber and oil palm farmers, and as orchard growers. However, as their roads have been cut off by the floods, they were unable to travel outside and sell their produce to the market. This has resulted in a loss of revenue worth millions of baht.

At least 80 students were also unable to go to school. Therefore, Mr. Wongsak has requested local authorities to quickly provide assistance to alleviate their distress.
