BANGKOK: -- NIDA Poll released its latest survey showing the 60-year-old former politician and economist Somkid Jatusripitak is the most suitable person to be in charge of economic affairs of the interim appointed government.

The survey by the research centre of the National Institute of Development Administration or NIDA Poll was conducted during June 25-26 from a total of 1,251 samples who graduated bachelor degree level education or higher from universities nationwide.

The question asked is who should be the most appropriate person to become the deputy prime minister in charge of economic affairs or finance minister of the government to be appointed by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).

The result showed that 20.78% supported Dr Somkid Jatusripitak, while 15.43% saw MR Pridiyathorn Devakula the most suitable person.

The poll also said 13.19% saw none was qualified for the position, but 6.47% gave Suppachai Panitchpakdi the most suitable person to handle economic affairs of the interim government.

Only 6.24% favoured NCPO head Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha to do the job, while 5.68% chose Surakiart Sathiarathai.

7.9% were not specific and named others who included Ammar Siamwalla, Narongchai Akaraseranee, Prasarn Trairatvorakul, Virabongsa Ramangkura, Anand Payarachun, Korn Chatikavanich, Surin Pitsuwan, ACM PrajinJuntong, MR Jatumongol Sonakul, Chalongpob Susangkorakarn, and Thanong Pittaya.

NIDA Poll said only 1.36% said anyone who is qualified while 0.40% favoured an elected person to handle economic affairs.

Isn't he an ex TRT guy? Wasn't he banned at a point?

Dr. Somkid was MoF in one of the Thaksin cabinets. He might have been banned for five years as most of the prominent TRT people, but like the other 110 he returned. He seems well thought of as even the NCPO asked him as advisor in their committee on Economic Affairs.

The last thing that Thailand needs now, is old politicians returned from bans.....returned from defunct parties.....!

Get some fresh blood into the administration...even if it is only an interim position.....there have to be some well experienced and clever people here in Thailand....don't need old hats thown into the ring anymore....these types of people are inbred with nepotism, corruption and cronyism.....!

Architect of Taksinomics and first choice FM for the Surayud government because of his strong believes in self sufficiency economics. What a paradox. Wonder who will turn up this time.

High ranking founder of TRT.. Highly thought of by Thaksin...credited with being the man behind 'Thaksinomics' and populist policies. The good general will need a sprinkle of that magic if he wishes to remain high in his own popularity ratings

Isn't he an ex TRT guy? Wasn't he banned at a point?

Yes but, not all ex TRT members are lost causes.. Apparently he is well regarded by those that count.

More here for info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somkid_Jatusripitak

NCPO would not have chosen him if he was a potential liability.
