Police say they have arrested a former anti-government protest guard who allegedly assaulted and shot at an army colonel earlier this year.

BANGKOK — Police say they have arrested a former anti-government protest guard who allegedly assaulted and shot at an army colonel earlier this year.

Anond Klinkaew, 45, is accused of assaulting Col. Witthawat Wattanakul in April while guarding protesters belonging to the People's Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD), an anti-government group who staged six months of street rallies aimed at toppling then-Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

On 25 April a group of PCAD guards, allegedly including Mr. Anond, beat and shot at Col. Witthawat after he tried to remove a traffic cone near a PCAD rally on Chaeng Wattana Road. Col. Witthawat was hospitalised for several weeks after the incident.

Mr. Anond was arrested in Nakhon Ratchasima province, said Pol.Gen. Somyot Pumpanmuang, deputy chief of the Royal Thai Police, at the police press conference today.

Pol.Gen. Somyot said Mr. Anond used to work as furniture carpenter in Samut Sakhon province and later became a PCAD security guard. Mr. Anond was reportedly trained and placed in "The Black Lion" squad of PCAD's security unit.

Although Mr. Anond was paid 500 baht per day for his service as a guard, he joined the protest movement because he personally agreed with the group, Pol.Gen. Somyot said.

"Police are not bullying or falsely implicating [Mr. Anond]," Pol.Gen. Somyot told reporters. "We are merely following our duty, which is to arrest people per arrest warrants."

Mr. Anond is also wanted in connection with separate cases of robbing firearms from Thoong Song Hong police officers on 7 May and assaulting a police officer on 9 May, according to Pol.Gen. Somyot.

The suspect apologised in person to the mother of Col. Witthawat, who was also present at the press conference. The mother, Bang-onrat Wattanakul, said she was at the press conference because she wanted to ask Mr. Anond why he assaulted innocent bystanders like her son.

"The victim did not assault anyone. He didn't harm the guards. He already announced that he didn't have any guns and wouldn't fight, yet you still mobbed and assaulted [Col.Witthawat]," Ms. Bang-onrat said to Mr. Anond. "You shot at him. You dragged him to an empty building and beat him with your feet. As a mother, I cannot bear this even if you apologise to me."

She added, "But I will forgive your bad karma. Please accept the fault you have committed. If you are really a man, you should accept what you have done."

Mr. Anond replied that he was sorry for what happened and would like to apologise to her on the behalf of other guards. He then kneeled down and respectfully bowed to Ms. Bang-onrat to seek her forgiveness.

During the six month anti-government protest campaign, there were several incidents of PCAD guards assaulting innocent bystanders, often for removing traffic cones placed by the guards.

Love the way they just try to say sorry and think it will all go away. These people were/are absolute nothing but violent scum and all need to be rounded up and thrown into jail for as long as possible. Then round up the mad monk.

Why did it take so long? Even if the army officer did not press charges, carrying and using a firearm to shoot someone, as well as giving someone a beating, should be enough to land the perpetrator in jail. So many times, I just have to scratch my head and remind myself that This is Thailand and they don't do things the way they do back home. Oh, well, at least he is off the street for now; not that there aren't many more just like him.

Well that's a laugh. When I presented the police in Bangkok with a person I had paid off duty police to arrest, against whom there was an arrest warrant issued by the Phuket Court, I was told if I didn't pay 45,000 baht they would let the person go. I don't think 'merely following our duty' is something the police are very adept at.

One of Thailand's huge issue is that nobody here accepts any responsibility for the things they do. It seems to me that Thais just consider it bad karma catching up with them when they get arrested for some evil they have committed rather than thinking they have personally done something wrong.

I had occasion to sue a lawyer for verifying a forged document used to misappropriate several large assets. The general consensus was that I am bad for suing a lawyer who was just doing his job! No thought of fault - no thought of the seriousness of his action (in the tens of millions) - no understanding that if lawyers go around verifying forged documents that other officials (blindly) rely on, then nobody's assets are safe.

I sometimes wonder if Thais are taught right from wrong or whether the cancer of corruption has obscured the most basic human understanding.

When you say ALL these people, you mean the anti government protester guards?

What about the 24 people murdered by the side you support?... what are they if not much much worse than scum. Child murderers etc....

Talk about complete blind bias opinion.

Well.... A 'biased opinion' is 'no opinion' at all.

Lest we not take into account the FACTS that the actual stupidity of the guy who drove right up to a well documented protest site that has been there for six months in the dead of night knowing it was heavily guarded and a major target for terrorist attack and got out of his car and removed cones so he could drive into the site.

I mean.... come on, let's be balanced about this. What if ha had a car full of explosives? If that had been an army checkpoint at such a sensitive site and a huge terrorist target while terrorists were stalking the area nightly looking for the opportunity to strike, the results would have been the same or even worse... he would have probably been shot dead before he even got his hand on the cone.

If I did something moronic like that... I would have no problem at all accepting people calling me an idiot and that I deserved it. Acts of complete stupidity often have dire negative consequences...

I liked this comment from his mum.

"She added, "But I will forgive your bad karma. Please accept the fault you have committed."

So if she believes in karma... I suppose her son being shot in the ankle was him getting his own bad karma then.

It doesn't say anything about him being let off.

It is not uncommon in Thailand for the offender to be paraded in front of their victim/s at a press gathering.

Love the way they just try to say sorry and think it will all go away.

Love the way you make up imagined things.

There's absolutely nothing whatsoever in the article that indicates what you say.

Please explain to me which side it is that I support? I would really like to know because it definitely isn't the low life pieces of red excrement and it definitely isn't the yellows or these lowlife pieces of PDRC excrement.

The reason I replied about the PCAD guard is because that is what the story is about. It is not about the red excrement it is about this piece of turd.

Just because I do not applaud and support this guards violent action that does not make me a red supporter.

Could you show where chooka said he supported the reds in any way.

You are clearly biased if you think dragging an unarmed person away to be shot an beaten is ok, just because your beloved yellow thugs did it.

Very good. I applaud the apprehension of all thugs and bullies, no matter what color shirts they wear.

This is the first time I hear the victim was dragged to an empty building. Previously we had

"Ms. Bang-onrat claimed that Col. Witthawat heard several gunshots and realised that he was shot in his legs, so he attempted to run and seek shelter near the Royal Thai Armed Force Headquarters, where he works, but the PCAD militants eventually caught up with him and mob-beat him until they discovered a military ID card on his car."

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/723567-mother-denounces-pcad-guards-brutal-assault-on-her-son/

or from the brother

"Col. Witthawat reportedly got out of his car and began to remove the traffic cones. A group of PCAD guards then opened fire on the officer and rushed forward to beat him violently, despite Col. Witthawat's pleas for mercy, said Pol.Col. Thanawat.

Pol.Col. Thanawat claimed that the guards only stopped assaulting Col. Witthawat after they found his military ID card while searching his car."

But where does it suggest that apologising, which was only the right & proper thing to do, was somehow going to make the charges "all go away" ?

I'm glad the guard has been detained, now let his case go forward, No Double Standards !

And I look forward to the people who murdered or injured anti-government protesters, over the several months, also be identified & caught & charged.

At some point, in the fullness of time, at the appropriate juncture, after due investigation & consideration, etcetera.

I thought it was many guards, why just arresting one person??? is it only for the show?????

This bloke is looking surprisingly healthy for someone who shot at and assaulted an army officer, maybe he will need his teeth to keep talking.

"Actually", that's his imagination that doesn't exist anywhere in the article.

All those uniforms around the table look none too pleased with this guy. Methinks I would not want to be in his shoes.

I, also, never said anything about him being let off. I'm referring to the fact that the shooting occurred more that two months ago. At the time, there was no doubt to his guilt because even went to visit the army colonel in the hospital to ask his forgiveness. He should have been arrested at the time of the crime and the lovely photo op/press conference should have been taken then. He has not been in hiding nor has he denied his guilt. Why did the police wait more than two months to arrest a violent felon? Why did the police allow him to return to his job as an armed guard for the PDRC until the coup?

Bwing and asking for forgiveness is not enough. he is 45 years old he should know what he was doing. He was trained to do this i believe, that is why it happened. Suthep was in charge and should be held responsible.

Whatever happened this thug (yes I support the anti government and the coup) had no rights to do this and its good he is arrested.

Bwing and asking for forgiveness is not enough. he is 45 years old he should know what he was doing. He was trained to do this i believe, that is why it happened. Suthep was in charge and should be held responsible.

Suthep wasn't in charge of the protesters at Chaeng Wattana.

Yo, Chooka, Not all red's are as you call them "excrement" I know a lot of red supporters who are kind polite and generous, as to with many yellow supporters,

you remember the BKK floods, well I and my wife donated a substantial amount of food, toiletries, cloths, etc, so did many "red" supporters and so did the yellows,

you may not like their political view and that's ok, just remember there are good and bad on both side, that's fair and balanced, But also I wonder how much will be donated by the reds after having people like Miss beer princess, and the former miss Thailand sayings like they are all dirty, stupid, should not have the same vote value, and should all be shot, I and many reds and yellows I know denounce all form of violence against innocent people, that fair in your book mate?

Just glad those terror days of hoodlums in the city are over. They had their bravado and repeated defiant towards the authorities when in a mob. Now they are hunted down one by one and hauled to justice. Som nam na. Waiting for the arrest of the mad monk. He is the ringleader of the mob.

If he really did those things and there is enough evidence, I hope the courts will do their job. Violence should be condemned from all sides. Let's see them catch more of the red shirt murderers too. I hope everyone who turned to violence will be caught and face their day in court.

The monk has been arrested. He was taken in following the coup.

This is the first time I hear the victim was dragged to an empty building. Previously we had

Come on rubl. This is the first time you heard about being dragged to an empty building? I can't imagine why you would post such a comment unless you wanted to cast doubt on the reporting, or more likely, the statement made by the mother.

Ignoring that subtle attempt of distraction let's have a look at your first link;

"so he attempted to run and seek shelter near the Royal Thai Armed Force Headquarters, where he works"

OK, so he's near shelter, which happens to be the RTAF HQ. What do you think the chances of there being an empty building near the RTAF HQ where he was dragged into by the PCAD thugs when they caught up with him and then proceeded to beat him up? Feasible, yes?

"A group of PCAD guards then opened fire on the officer and rushed forward to beat him violently"

these thugs rush forward (towards the "shelter" that the Colonel was running to) and beat him up - no mention of being dragged into a building but that description is provided by the brother of the attacked colonel and he was not there at the time. This is his recollection of the events presumably told to him by the victim. It was the first reporting of the incident and by a third party , not the person who was there so quite conceivably is not an absolute verbatim account.

"Pol.Col. Thanawat claimed that the guards only stopped assaulting Col. Witthawat after they found his military ID card while searching his car."

Again, the events as stated by a third party, but I have no problem with accepting that a bunch of PCAD thugs were beating up the Colonel whilst others searched his car and found his ID. I don't see any contradiction between the English translation of the event in two different articles, the accounts of which no doubt were conducted entirely in Thai.

Once again I wonder about your motives for posting your "doubts" about this article.

All those uniforms around the table look none too pleased with this guy. Methinks I would not want to be in his shoes.

My first thoughts as well, the look of contempt on the guys on the right hand sides faces in particular. I wonder how many flights of stairs the accused is going to 'fall down' between now and next month? I suppose the look of contempt is in relation to a relatively lo so assaulting someone higher up the pecking order, a massive no no.

Just glad those terror days of hoodlums in the city are over. They had their bravado and repeated defiant towards the authorities when in a mob. Now they are hunted down one by one and hauled to justice. Som nam na. Waiting for the arrest of the mad monk. He is the ringleader of the mob.

The mad Eric needs to get his facts straight before he posts rubbish....
