Andy Coulson jailed for 18 months over phone hacking

Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson has been jailed for 18 months for conspiracy to hack phones.

The 46-year-old, who went on to become director of communications for Prime Minister David Cameron, was found guilty at the Old Bailey last week.

He was one of four ex-journalists at the tabloid to be sentenced, along with private investigator Glenn Mulcaire.

Five defendants, including former News International chief Rebekah Brooks, were cleared of all charges last week.

The sentences, all for conspiracy to unlawfully intercept communications, were:

Coulson, 46, of Canterbury - 18 months
Former chief reporter Neville Thurlbeck, 52, of Esher, Surrey - six months
Former news editor Greg Miskiw, 64, of Leeds - six months
Former reporter James Weatherup, 58, of Brentwood, Essex - four-month suspended sentence
Private investigator Glenn Mulcaire, 43, of Sutton, Surrey - six-month suspended sentence
Mulcaire - who faced four counts - and Weatherup also received 200 hours of community service.

Coulson was being taken to Belmarsh Prison in south-east London when he left the Old Bailey, the BBC understands.

Asked about the jailing of his former communications chief, the prime minister, who has apologised for hiring him, said: "What it says is that it's right that justice should be done and that no one is above the law - as I've always said."

Downing Street later said Mr Cameron had not spoken to Coulson since the guilty verdict.

"What it says is that if you commit a crime and you get caught and it gets publicized to the extent that we can't control the damage, then justice should be done and no one is above the law - as I've always said."

Compare what this man got for hacking a few Z list, washed out, past their best so called celebrities phones and to Rolf Harris for heinous sexual assaults on children for decades and it makes a mockery of any so called justice. This man only ended up where he did because politicians were determined to clampdown on a free press after they had the nerve to expose their wholesale theft from the taxpayer using the expenses system and nothing more. This whole farce cost over 100 MILLION pounds and people think this was a good result ?

With an 18 month sentence which is 3 times longer than any of the other sentences handed down just goes to prove how deeply involved the management was, obviously Rupert and son need to answer more questions, looks like Rolf will soon have some Aussie cell mates.

Rupet walks free? Wonder if they are still on the payroll as consultants?

Still ongoing investigations, He has been informed that the Met wants to talk to him again...

Hope they can nail him this time, if anything for the way he manipulated the Tory and Labour parties as some self proclaimed king maker in the latter half of the last century.

I think you will find it was the politicians that were kissing butt big time to Murdoch and not the other way round. It still boils down to a few has been so called celebrities having their phones hacked and this cost over 100 million and counting and people see this is a good use of public money and in the best interest of the public ? <deleted> I for one dont care if the poor little Luvvies had their phones hacked. When they papers are publishing good things they can't get enough of the papers. Similar to the politicians

This is a totally political prosecution
