We've had our house since it was built in 2008. Our neighbours tell us that we should now get the termite specialists to come and inspect / treat the house as it's more than 5 years since it was built. We've never had any problems, so I'm wondering if this is really necessary.

Could someone tell me what these specialists actually do to treat the house? I believe we have some sort of pipe system in the walls, as there is an access point to them in the wall at the front of the house.

For info, all of our outside space is tiled or covered in concrete, so we've no garden as such, and the house itself is built of red brick and concrete with a tiled roof within a village of similar properties.

I'm not a fan of chemicals, so I'm concerned about the health side of having these sprayed all over the place.

Any information / advice will be gratefully received.

The number one target is wood, cellulose so the fact you have a building with concrete and brick then you are much less off a target.

No need to send for the cavalry if you feel you are not under attack.

You as householder will be aware, if not spend some time doing a quick survey.

Look for evidence in your soft materials, bubbling plasterboard, dust in your kitchen drawers, timber rails in fencing, timber fascia boards.

If you are ever gardening keep your eyes open for the maggots and a best, they feel safe in the soil, often around old tree roots or dying shrubs.

If you see them in the soil then they could be under your floor slab but unlikely.

I had my slab drilled and injected last years but because I live on top of 8 tree legs.

Mine are salvaged ones but you can see what happened to them previously whilst under ground.post-150623-14047181429949_thumb.jpg

For peace of mind however you can buy yourself a pest control contract. We paid around 7k baht to a pest controller here for a one years contract. We just call them every month or two and they spray for termites, ants. So we have 12 visits, and they do the fence, the grass, my tree legs and even my outdoor wooden table and chairs.

I have never seen any other small reptiles dead, but a few large flying beetles,.

prevention is always better than cure, well cheaper anyway.

We had termites despite numerous pest control companies coming through and spraying. To be honest I am not even sure if there is a specialist in Thailand, though we did get a ridiculous quote from Rentokil

Thanks for your replies Eyecatcher and Kurnell. We probably should go ahead with it, just in case.

Eyecatcher, are you in Phuket? If so, I wondered if you'd pass on the name and telephone number of the company you use.

ours was built in 2008 on a moo-ban and has the same system as you, underground pipes laid before the house is built.

if you have this system which you described then you should have had a contract normally you pay 2ys in advance otherwise have the house done every yr.2,000bht we pay,as for the garden and around skirting boards, under kitchen cabinets and anywhere you see signs we have a solo pressure spray and get the treatment from home pro.[zypertec]

I have a lot of wood in my house and had been advised by the builder to lay chemical carrying pipes. I refused. I subsequently learned that at some time in the year they sprout wings and fly up into your joists anyway. I've found a solution of washing up liquid and water to be effective on the mounds if I spot one around the outside of the house. No termite inside, possibly because I had the wood varnished with a termite repellent included. Which might explain why the sole piece of bamboo (an outside seat) appears to be infested with them, the maker not using termite repellent, and the washing up liquid seems not to be able to penetrate unsure.png

Meatboy, thanks for the info. I've been quoted 7,000 baht, so I'd be interested to know who you use.

sorry I'm late replying,i live in korat on a moo-ban and the co.has a house near us and a contract with the owner who has built 3 estates.that is expensive ours 2,000bht once a yr.and ours is a large house with 5 points of entry.

for around the house and garden get a pressure spray because you will find somewhere needs to be sprayed almost every day.
