William Hague quits as foreign secretary in cabinet reshuffle

LONDON: -- William Hague has stood down as foreign secretary and will stay in the cabinet as Leader of the Commons, Downing Street has said.

Mr Hague is to leave Parliament at the 2015 general election after 26 years as MP for Richmond, North Yorkshire.

As part of a significant ministerial reshuffle, veteran Conservative MP Ken Clarke has also stepped down.

Senior ministers have told the BBC that the current defence secretary, Philip Hammond, will replace Mr Hague.

Labour described the reshuffle as "the massacre of the moderates".

Mr Clarke, who first became an MP in 1970, attended cabinet as minister without portfolio.

Why is this happening, I suspect something big is on the horizon.

You don't normally quit in a cabinet reshuffle, you get promoted, demoted or fired.

this down to the massive pedo scandal that is about to explode ..(he was in charge of an investigation years ago that basically was a cover up)

It could well be, this is on my list of suspected reasons.

I suspect you could be right guys, there seems to be the wish for some to get out of politics either by choice before it blows up or..... pushed to limit associated damage. Then again no party will be coming out of that smelling of roses if it really kicks off.

Then again things are moving in the Conservatives more towards taking a harder line against the EU .. Mr Hammond is the new foreign secretary and widely considered anti EU.

Which will be a nice change from the main EU lapdogs.

There may be some flames beneath the smoke generated by the "Great pedo hunt" which may even become serious now that the MP's choice of "Pedo Hunter" General, has resigned her appointment and could well be replaced by a real one.

if the house of commons is full of overcharging for expenses, pervs and friends to cover it up ,government and the press in cahoots, perhaps the army should step in and have a crackdownsmile.png

Hmmmm ... perhaps we should assume innocence until guilt is proven here. He could be leaving for a whole bunch of other reasons whistling.gif

Perhaps he just wants to spend more time with his boyfriend family.

What are you trying to imply; that William Hague is GAY?

Of course not. The chap he's with is a paid employee of his department. And simply shares hotel rooms with him at conferences to save money.

There you go being cynical again. Finally, a couple of gov't employees who selflessly try to save money for the country and they get no appreciation!

I'm gettin' the word . . .

Dont be an idiot the British Government sent in the forces it wasnt a coup and they didnt do it off their own back. The forces were doing the bidding of the Civillian British government, just as they do when sent to war.

There are dozens of examples and more of the British forces being used to quell mobs and ordered to do so by the Government BUT not ever has the army just "stepped in" and had a crackdown.

Dont try and tell me British History even warts and all m8 youll come unstuck.

In fairness, hanging around backstage at '70s Tory Party conferences probably gave him a bit of an "education".
