You can buy a very good and reliable "rare car' no longer in production. I bought few month ago a luxury SAAB 9000 in a perfect condition . little mileage clean leather and wood trim etc...for as little as 60000! It was advertized for sale at 99000 bath in Bangkok. The reason for being so cheap is than the parts are not always available in Thailand but you can get them shipped from England at very good price. This is my 3rd SAAB and I've done 500000K with each of them with no problems at all!! To me, best car in the world, ever!

Auctions aren't a bad option, but often only open to Thais....... and they are pretty good at snapping up the obvious bargains.

The selectipon is more likely to be newer cars where the financing has slipped or have been used as a working car for a year or two.

Auctions in Pattaya frequented mostly by Foreigners. Not sure I understand how particular cars or any object can be "snapped" up by anybody at an auction....the person who bids the highest..... gets it..

My car came from an auction in Bangkok, where a Thai was required to bid.

Yes in Pattaya foreigners are welcome , but the few I attended, I would not say they were in a majority. Far from it. Not sure why you needed to be pedantic.

WOW, thanks or this link bkk james.

im here years and never came across it.

not for the cheap sh_t, but the trucks are quite reasonable too.

here's another : http://one2car.com/search/search_result.aspx?Price1=0&Price2=200000&

you'll have to ignore some of them with no prices cause the filter is 0-200,000 baht so don't get your hopes up of getting a 2013 Panorama for under 200k lol

If you buy A cheap car in Thailand it's probably old.New cars are expensive cause of taxes. So if A person sells that car A year or so later it's still fairly expensive.Prices go down but not near as much as they should. You will end up paying new car prices in the US

For A used car in Thailand.Unless of course it's old.

best to buy from an auction of reposessed vehicles. A lot cheaper than from any of the second hand car dealers. You normally can check cars in the morning before they get auctioned in the afternoon. Suggest you have a look once or twice how the auction works, get familiar with pricing for the models you are interested. You can also look up on the internet which models were auctioned at what price to give you an indication of the price range you pay. From what I have seen, Toyota, Isuzu, Honda models are most popular and people pay quite a lot even for older models. For other brands that are less popular you can get some really good deals for relatively new cars, ie Mazda, Chevy etc. If you are bot a car expert, hire a car mechanic for the morning to check the engine of cars you are interested to make sure there is no problem. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more information about the auctions.

There are a few American muscle cars near where I live that look like good project cars

American muscle cars are rare over here (i mean Americans, not Holdens or any Aussie Falsons). Muscle cars aren't cheap, even if they old and rusty. Usually they don't even have any blue book at all or if so, then you have to pay all the back taxes for the last decade.

Most of them are just 4 doors anyway, so they aren't real muscle cars.

2 Door Coupes aren't available in TH, or only for much over a Million for a decent one. Most of them not even have a V8 anymore, just some 95 horsepower Nissan Diesel in it.

There are rare possibilities to find something about 200'k, but very rare. It will be a piece of junk for that price. Until it will be drivable and restored it gonna cost 600'k and at least a year of work (and headaches).

I have a nice Olds Cutlass 2 door Coupe 4 sale. But it isn't cheap.

I've seen plenty of 2 doors near me. Not sure if they ar V8 or not. Likely not.

We bought 2010 Kia Picanto auto for 160k cash. 64k km on the clock. Everything perfect.

The insurance broker values it as 200k baht. The DoLT valued it as 220k baht.

It was bought new for 472k on finance, we have the receipt, the didn't pay for 3 months so it was repossed and sold at auction.

The kicker is... the receipts hidden away in the docs show that it was bought at the auction by the company we bought it off for 106k+7k tax. Total 113k.

Being a tight facker I only wish I went to these auctions before buying it. :D

I certainly can't complain about buying the car for 160k baht though.

I am in the market this year for a sports type Mercedes or similar -probably from a BKK garage or privately if available -
- my question is - is there a best time of the year to be buying i.e. when you can bargain more ?

I assume that , as in most countries you can get , say 10% off the price or more but not sure about this in

Thailand .

Thanks , Jim

Now Jim ...that depends on how good a negotiator you are ...remember one of the golden rules ... there are many by the way. A pound is a pound whether you are discussing 100 pounds or 10,000 pounds ...good luck and enjoy.

If you want a soft top it might be better in the rainy season ...winter in the UK is soft top buying time ...

second hand car prices are linked to the "return" on the outlay. This is the work car can do either for transport rental and resale.

factors involved range far beyond the initial cost of the vehicle itself.

some obvious factors would be running costs...fuel, insurance and maintenance, depreciation, the cost of roads, motoing fines and driving conditions, and the effects of climate, finance, interest rates, subsidies, supply - do your sums - motoring in Thailand is cheap!
