Favourite Bars/Pubs - Not Go Go

Apart from the obvious attractions of the go go bars - which is another topic completely!, I was wondering which are your favourite bars/pubs?

High on my list would be The Kiwi, on Soi 8. Great service, good food- excellent sunday pork roast! and a very good breakfast.

Happy hour on all day- 99 baht for a pint of Tiger or Heineken.

Kiwi has gone down hill since its Soi 8 days. The Royal Oak on 33/1 is good as long as you avoid quiz night.

I like The Huntsman pub in the basement of the Landmark.

Not exactly cheap, but great service and a nice quiet cool haven.

Quite like Iron Fairies... Water Library nearby in Thong Lor is good fun as well, although the liquid nitrogen cocktails look better than they taste.



Moose at Ekkamai, Blue Velvet, <deleted> and I know people think it;s kind of cheesy but on a good night Maggie Choos, for giving that John Woo / Wong Kar Wai sort of feeling.

Good post. I've never been to any of these places, but I think I get the poster's point. I live in Chiang Mai, and if you are unfortunate enough to wind up in the senile, grouchy, old man's club also known as the Chiang Mai Forum, it is just amazing to see how places are rated/judged on their ability to duplicate comfort foods from back home. Shepherd's pie, pot roast, weinies and beans, overcooked veggies....you can have it all....and the drink prices at some of these places are sky high. I live near very trendy Nimmanhaemin, and lots of folks only want to do westernized stuff, like bland thai food, or 89 thb pad Thai....Some of the best I've ever eaten is 30 THB, and it really isn't hard to find. I'm almost always the only farang in the place. For drinking, I know a place, right off Nimman, with an outdoor beer garden type place with a nice cover, and generally good ambiance. Comfortable chairs, and pretty promo girls/waitresses. Get there before 8, and it's 5 large leos for 199, after 8 it's 4 for 210. 500 ml Singha for the same price.... Good live music at 9pm. Can bring in street food and eat it. I've watched the young thai owner build this business for 8 years; cold beer and high volume beer sales.....So it's cheaper than 7-11, and almost always beats drinking alone, but the farang rarely go near the place. Very tough to figure out. But as stated...traveling half way around the world to find a "proper meatloaf" etc. or an Irish pub just defies logic. The quality of the Thai women I've met there is so much better than the farang bars.....engineers, nurses, teachers, lawyers, etc....and the beer is cold and cheap....and if you didn't notice the Thais like to drink, often they will have a bookcase full of empties by their table. They are pretty approachable, also, even with little Thai Language knowledge. Find the cheap cold beer in a good location, and the rest kind of takes care of itself.

It's at the very end of soi 7/1, just before the right hand turn that becomes soi 9. In fact, walking down soi 9 and turning left at the end will alleviate the massage offers you'll be bombarded with on soi 7/1. Of course, you'll deal with a negative olefactory experience by doing that. That's Bangkok.

What I like about it is this - convenient location, nice group of friendly regulars that welcome anyone from anywhere but is removed from the crush of the tourists, always sports on TV, small enough to be cozy but expandable to accommodate larger groups, an outdoor wooden deck, and a staff that doesn't give you a bunch of token smiles. Did I mention the Happy Hour prices are pretty darn good? Second cheapest pint of Guinness/Magners I've found (220/199 thb) in Bangkok.

Nearly every time I've been there I've met some interesting people to engage in conversation in an environment that is conducive to conversation (i.e., there isn't loud pounding music.)

Oh - and you don't have to climb stairs to use the loo.

Silly and stereotypical statements that require little thought, huh?

There's something to be said about congregating with people with whom you share common interests, be it sports, the news of the day back home, sharing information about life in Thailand, etc. The easiest places to do that is in expat pubs or at meetings of expat clubs.

There's also variety to consider. I eat and drink from a rather large variety of ethnic samplings when I'm in my home country so why would I confine myself to Thai places when I'm in Thailand?

But you knew this.

Black Swan also gets my vote...never had any problems with miserable staff though, always friendly to me.

Anyway, I am in a good mood, I finally made contact with our friend yesterday.

The Happy Beer Garden on Suriwong road, in front of the Montien plaza.

The most enjoyable part is the people watching, you are directly opposite Patpong 1 & Patpong 2, but the other side of the road and is not a hostess bar, but you can watch all the young, middle aged and elderly peruse the markets as if it was a normal night in Europe. A couple of hours later, when the heat and the exotic night life has hit them and you just sit back, take another glug and think,' boy is he gonna regret that in the morning'. Or not as the case may be.

The Game on soi 9 - must be the best location on sukhumvit to drink and watch people!
