They all looked the same to me. I visited about 6 different houseboats. I wouldn't be surprised if they were all owned by the same person/company. They are all kind of primitive, nevertheless really a fun way of spending a weekend.

I just go there ands hire a long boat and they take you to one that has a vacancy. Thai style, no fuss or bother. It's great out there for a swim, kayak and peaceful nights sleep. I paid 500 bht last time for a room.

I regularly go to eat at Ekachai and stayed there once. It is much the largest and cleanest of the many places. Whilst it is amusing to stay overnight I did not find it particularly relaxing as the sounds of other guests are easily heard and should anyone walk around in the night the whole raft moves and creaks. Electricity was only available from 8 pm to 6 am, but it was nice to get out of bed and walk straight into the lake for a refreshing swim before a good breakfast.

so there are no separated/better rooms to avoid the noisy neighbours? perhaps a day trip is better then...

The regular rooms are 200-300 and VIP are 500. I honestly couldn't see the difference except that the VIP rooms had ceiling fans. All have razor thin walls made of rattan? If the people in the room next to you cough or pass gas, you will hear it.

Day trips are great. Go early on a Sunday morning, spend the day swimming, drinking and eating, reading, etc. You can also go fishing. Like another poster said, many people bring their own booze and food and pay a fee for the staff to provide the grill, cooking utensils, etc. We went about 6 weeks ago for about the 4th time and spent the day. Our bill was about 2200 just for food and drinks which I suspect is why so many people bring their own. Having said that, the food was very good, fresh, and nicely prepared (nice fish dishes) and beer was ice cold. Actually that may have included the fee for the boat to take you out and pick you up - I forget now.

When I stayed on one (don't remember which) and all the others I saw there are floating on platoons and tethered to the shore. Not houseboats, a Thai interpretation of one (you know calling it something that's it's not but pretends to be) but never the less it's great for a night. You are sleeping on the water and can dive from the dock your bedroom is on for a morning swim, go kayaking and really get the away-from-it-all feel.
