Mac With True Wifi Router

I have just signed up for true 512 ADSL and will be using a mac Ibook. All the true literature says that it does not work with mac. I suspect this is just for customer service reasons, rather than it really not working with the mac. Also, I thought (and gather from some posts) that it may be a problem with the modem that they provide. So, I decided to go with the wifi package that they offer, which is an extra 250B/month but gives you unlimited access to true wifi hotspots as well as an all in one modem/wifi-router. Snce my ibook has airport built in, I thought that this would alleviate the compatability problems with true/mac? Can anyone tell me if this is true? If not, what do I need to do to get this set up in order to work at home?

I do not know if the MAC will work with a USB modem, which is probably

what you get with the deal. :o

There should be no problem if you use an ethernet connection,

or on the wireless side.

er astral ... <i> router </> :o

your wifi router should be able to maintain the PPPoE connection to true.

you will just have to oconfigure your apple to connect to the router .

though do a search of this subforum to learn about setting up your wifi/router securely.

Thanks...I don't think it wil be a usb modem, as the true salesperson told me that it would be a all in one modem/wifi router. So, how can I set it up manually?

if its using the universally common DHCP protocol to allocate interfaces, routes and DNS info then the OSX on a Mac will just work. You could go into System preferences and check DHCP under the TCPIP tab but it should already be set default. I know this from my MBP with Wireless and Ethernet. Easy as turning it on. Never tried a USB though.

Just an update....Got the wifi hooked up to my mac with True with no problems. Spent 10 minutes on the phone with their customer service and she walked me through how to set up the router (online). After this was done, I have been surfing wirelessly with no problems whatsoever.

When you've got security worked out let me know.

Cheers

I was told that the free (1Bht) True router wouldn't work with my Powerbook G4, so I shopped and shopped for the NetGear 108 Mbs Super Wireless G834GT router/modem. Finally found it at Pantip 4th Flr for 2500Bht. Darn it... are you saying the True Freebie worked for you?

Now if only True lived up to their 1000 download speed! I just checked it at TV and it was only 437 Ba! :o

I'm not sure if the USB modem would have worked with the mac, but when you sign up for the Wifi service (250B/month) you get an all-in-one wifirouter/modem. THis is how I set it up with my com and it works both with the cable and wirelessly.

I'm not sure about the security, but I think that anyone else would have to have the WEP key in order to get on my waves. If this isn't true, someone let me know how to check and then how to fix the problem.

When I set up my True account (quite a while ago now), I asked for an ethernet modem and they cheerfully provided it. Their modem plugs into my Apple Airport, which configures itself, and that's all there is to setting up a wi-fi connection for an iBook or a Powerbook.

And as for security, yes, if you've enabled WEP (or any of its variations) and set a password, no casual user without the password can log onto your connection. WEP is crackable (variations on WEP being less so) if you really know what's you're doing, but I wouldn't worry about it. The odds of anyone that sophisticated being within range of your connection would have to be pretty long.
