New mobile phone warranty - only got 2 months - can this be true ?

Ive been having a problem with a new Nokia mobile phone which I purchased a week ago , so I took it to an official Nokia Care Center where the technician checked the phone and came to the conclusion that it has to be returned to the main Nokia head service center in Bangkok for repair ,

When The Nokia Care Center receptionists entered the phones IMEI number into the Nokia database computer, it showed that the phones warranty would end in two months time . I told the Nokia Care receptionists I had purchased the phone brand new , only one week ago, and asked her how can the phone only have two months warranty left when it should have a one year warranty period , the receptionists said that when a Nokia phone is purchased by a Nokia phone reseller , that reseller then submits the phones IMEI number to Nokia , and the phones warranty period ( one year ) is activated from the date that the Nokia phone reseller submits the IMIE to Nokia .

So if the the Nokia Care Center receptionists is correct , then if a Nokia phone reseller purchases a Nokia phone to re sell and registers the phones IMEI with Nokia , then the Nokia phone reseller keeps the phone in his stock for say 11 months , then finally sells it , the phones buyer will only get one months warranty

The phone was purchased online from a well known Thai company , and I will be asking the company for its comments about the warranty, but I thought I would ask here first to see if any one else had experienced this sort of warranty problem .

I had a Thai person with me at the Nokia Care Center who translated the conversation.

I know TIT but just can't see what the Nokia Care Center receptionists stated can be true , or can it ?

Generally phone companies put a 15 month warranty on their system. They believe this will cover them for retail shop stock holding. The well known online shop may well be clearing old stock hence the decent prices. Saying all of this I believe that Thai law gives 12 months warranty from date of purchase unless otherwise specified.

I have seen this practice with electrical appliances and I presume the manufacturer is protecting themselves from unreasonable warranty claims if the sale isn't properly documented. With an extra few months warranty to cover the selling period it can work to your advantage if you happen to get brand new stock.

In any case I would go back to Nokia with your receipt and insist they adjust your warranty period to one full year as it normally should be. I don't think they would refuse if you have a proper receipt. If they do I would raise a serious fuss.
